Wayne citizens vote down sales tax increase8 May 2008 — Wayne County citizens voiced an overwhelming “no” to a quarter-cent sales tax, according to unofficial returns from Tuesday’s elections. Over 22,000 voters came out to vote on the issue, and 82 percent of those voted against the tax. The proposed tax had been scheduled to fund emergency communications equipment over the next four years, and would go toward other county projects after that point. However, the county cannot levy the tax if the voters have not supported it. Three primaries were on the ballot for county-wide offices. The first was the Democratic primary for County Commissioner at Large. Sandra Raiford McCullen was the lead vote-getter, earning 48.92 percent of the vote. Chris Gurley was a close second with 33.3 percent, and Darrell Horne had 17.78 percent. In the Republican primary for the same office, Hal Keck earned the nod with 61.31 percent of the vote. Challenger Jeff Jennings earned 38.69 percent. Voters in Northern Wayne County selected incumbent Andy Anderson for their choice on the Republican ticket for the District 1 commissioner’s seat. Anderson had 68.91 percent of the vote, while challenger James Beckwith earned 31.09 percent. Wayne County Democrats gave Bev Perdue the nod for governorship, giving her a narrow lead with 53.14 percent of the vote. Richard Moore had 42.95 percent of Wayne County’s vote. On the Republican side, Fred Smith earned a clear lead for the Republican nomination in Wayne County, despite losing overall in the state. He had 66.8 percent of the vote in the county. His closest opponent was Pat McCrory, who garnered 21.5 percent of the vote. For the presidential contests, Republicans in Wayne overwhelmingly supported John McCain, while Barack Obama earned the highest vote of Democrats in the county with 56.36 percent of the vote. Republican David Rouzer got the party’s nod in Wayne County for NC State Senate District 12 with 57.88 percent of the vote. Kay Carroll won the Democratic primary with 57.52 percent. Don Davis won the Democratic primary in Wayne with 39.76 percent of the vote for District 5, while Ed Wilson came in a close second with 24.62 percent. Wayne County Democrats pitted Janet Cowell neck and neck with David Young in the race for treasurer. Cowell earned 39.87 percent of the vote, while Young had 39.39 percent. Republicans wanted Robert Pittinger for the ticket for Lieutenant Governor, while Democrats selected Walter Dalton.
