Lady Cobras celebrate 137-game streak8 May 2008 — With two swift wins this week, the Norwayne softball team has furthered its winning legacy. After finishing out their 2008 season with a win against Eastern Wayne on Monday, the Lady Cobras celebrated 137 straight wins, which amounts to a decade without a single loss. But first, the ladies handed Rosewood an 8-1 loss on Thursday. The Lady Cobras capitalized on all eight hits of the game. The lone run for Rosewood came late in the game, as the Eagles finally crossed the plate in the sixth. But Norwayne had already earned eight runs at that point in the game, and held the Eagles at one through the final inning. Taylor Cox was the only Norwayne batter with multiple hits. Cox was 2-for-3 at the plate. Brooke Bell, Misty Edwards, Jenna Van Horn, Ivy Hartzell, Rachel Jordan, and Reagan Herndon each had a hit for Norwayne. The girls finished out their season with a 15-0 battering of Eastern Wayne on Monday. The Lady Cobras were on fire at the plate, with a total of 19 hits for the game. The girls’ highest scoring inning came in the third, when they sent a total of six runners home. Edwards and Caroline Riggs were both perfect on their trips to the plate. Bell and Hartzell had three hits apiece, and Van Horne, Jordan, and Connor Davis each had two hits. The Cobras had doubles from Bell, Van Horn, Jordan, and Hartzell. The baseball team also finished out an impressive season this week, with two wins boosting them to 12-2 for the season. The Norwayne boys staked their lead early on Thursday against Rosewood, with a five run advantage at the end of the third inning. After the Cobras tacked on a pair of runs in the next two innings, Rosewood slipped in two runs of their own in the sixth. But the Eagles couldn’t catch up, and the Norwayne boys earned the win. Bryant Stafford was the winning pitcher, throwing into the sixth inning. He allowed only one hit, one earned run, and struck out six batters. Taylor relieved in the sixth and finished out the game with three hits and one earned run. Collin Dubose and Stafford each had two hits for the Cobras. The boys played one of their closest games of the year Monday night to wrap up the season, finishing with a 3-2 defeat of Eastern Wayne. Norwayne gained a lead early with two runs in the third. Each team sent one across the plate in the fifth inning. During the seventh, Eastern Wayne crept closer with a second run, but the Cobras halted the scoring there for the win. Norwayne only had two hits for the night, one each from Dubose and Kyle Walker. Stafford pitched the whole game, striking out 10 with only four hits. The boys finished with a 5-1 conference record.
