Lady Falcons tied for first with Southern Wayne

8 May 2008 — The Aycock girls’ softball team finished their regular season this week perched at the top spot of the conference. Their 8-2 defeat of Beddingfield on Thursday tied the Lady Falcons with Southern Wayne for first place in the Eastern Carolina Conference.

The last time Aycock met up with Beddingfield, a 15-inning marathon game ensued. But the Aycock ladies made quick work this time around, stopping the Bruins in seven.

Neither team scored in the first two innings, but the Falcon bats came to life in the third. Cara Frederick’s double sent three runners home, and a fourth crossed the plate by the end of the inning, giving Aycock the lead.

Beddingfield fought back with two runs in the fourth, scoring both times on Aycock errors. But the Falcons stopped them there, allowing no more runs for the night and earning four more of their own to secure the win.

Amber Baker was also a strong hitter on Thursday, with a two-run triple in the fifth. Frederick, Leigh Smith, and Brittany Ford all had two hits apiece, and a double from Smith sent a teammate home. Tori Benton and Stevie Savage both recorded a double for their only hit of the night.

Pitcher Emily Jordan threw all seven innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out eight.

After a bye in the first round of the conference playoffs, the ladies hosted the semifinals on Wednesday.
