Aycock boys earn Eastern Carolina Conference title8 May 2008 — The Aycock baseball team blasted through the conference tournament this week, earning a total of 24 runs in two games and earning the Eastern Carolina Conference title. After a slow start, the Falcons trumped Hunt in the semifinal round on Thursday with an 11-3 victory. The Aycock boys entered the bottom of the third down two runs. But as a bunt from Jordan Carr loaded the bases and Zach Wright took the plate, things were about to change. Wright’s hit just made it over the fence to send all four boys across the plate for a two-run advantage. The boys earned three more in the fifth inning, and rebuked a third run from Hunt in the sixth by putting four more on the board. Seven Falcons had hits for the night. Will Edgerton had three hits on five tries, and sent two teammates in for runs. Wright, Taylor, and Hill each had two runs, and Narron, Carr, and Wooten contributed one apiece. Jesse Randolph was the winning pitcher, going six innings and striking out three. He walked one, had nine hits, and allowed three runs. Eric Dubose relieved in the final inning, with one hit and one strikeout. The Aycock boys faced Eastern Wayne on Monday night, and they were out for revenge. The Warriors had posted two wins against Aycock earlier in the season, and the Falcons wanted to see a win this time around. And revenge they got. At first, it seemed that the night could go the way the Falcons’ past two meetings with the Warriors have gone. Eastern Wayne established a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the Falcons weren’t planning on sitting back this time. Aycock closed in within one run of the Warriors in their next at-bat, and blew the Warriors out of the water in the third as they brought in seven more runs. After tacking on two more in the fourth, the slugfest slowed a bit, and the score remained steady at 12-4 through the sixth inning. The Falcons earned the win with one more run in the seventh, and held the Warriors steady at four after the initial inning. Dubose led the offense, pitching all seven innings. He had six strikeouts and allowed four runs on eight hits while only walking three. Narron, Carr, and Wright contributed three hits apiece for the Falcons. Steven Strouse was perfect on his two trips to the plate, and had four RBI. Will Edgerton had a homer with a runner on base for his only hit of the night. John Taylor and Jackson Wooten each had a hit as well. The Falcons host Oxford Webb Friday night at 7:00 for the first round of the NCHSAA state playoffs.
