Update on school renovation plansBy Sarah A. Wise 1 May 2008 — The Wayne County Schools Facilities committee met on Tuesday afternoon, and the group presented an update on the renovations planned for county schools. The facilities upgrade, which includes structural renovations for many county schools, has been contracted to RN Rouse construction management. The group informed the committee today that they have been meeting to discuss the specifics within the scope of the project, and will present that scope in order to receive an approximate cost for construction. The scope of the project includes the renovations at Norwayne Middle, including a new building as well as adjustments to older buildings. A new 24-classroom facility will be constructed on the site, and a drainage system will be installed to deal with water issues on campus. The project will also include renovations to the cafeteria and kitchen, as well as installation of air conditioning in the gymnasium. Sprunt Hill did point out that the air condition system would be for the gym area only and would not include offices or the concession stand area and restrooms. He noted that a few items within the scope of renovations, such as installing new lighting fixtures and removing asbestos from the schools, were covered in other projects that had already received funding and would not be on the scope submitted. The board also viewed a presentation for Phase II of the Performance Contracting project, which seeks to make all the county’s schools more energy efficient. As part of the project, Charles B. Aycock High and Northeast and Northwest Elementary are tentatively slated for upgrades. All three schools will receive new lighting fixtures and outside air units. They will also see upgrades on the boiler system and cooling systems. In addition to regular business, the board also approved a request from the Northeast Elementary Athletic Association to be allowed to build a shelter near the ball field. The shelter will be located beside the concession stand and used to house a golf cart. It will have a metal exterior and wood interior to prevent rotting.
