deaths & funerals1 May 2008 GROVER M. GODWIN Grover Michael Godwin, 63, of Currie, NC, died Tuesday, April 22. Mr. Godwin was born in Wayne County on Oct. 27, 1944, to the late Armied Adolphus Godwin Sr. and Thelma Blackburn Godwin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marines where he served in the Vietnam War. Graveside services were held on Friday, April 25 at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Princeton. He is survived by his wife, Barbara B. Godwin; one son, Michael Godwin of Goldsboro; one stepson, Frank Pittman and his wife, Leslie, of Four Oaks; one stepdaughter, Pam Chase and her husband, Robbie, of Pikeville; one brother-in-law, Hubert Hill of Goldsboro; three grandsons; three step-grandsons and three step-granddaughters. JESSIE L. HALES Jessie Lindsay Hales, 91, of Greensboro, formerly of Wayne County, died at Well-Spring Health Care Center in Greensboro on Wednesday, April 9. She was born in Almond to the late John and France Lindsay, and was preceded in death by her husband, John Hales of Pikeville. Three children survive. Memorial services will be held Friday, May 9, at 3 p.m. at Richardson Auditorium, WellSpring Retirement Community, Greensboro, with a reception following at 305 Kemp Road West, Greensboro. FANNIE A. ISLER Fannie Anderson Isler, 78, of LaGrange, died Wednesday, April 23 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Isler was born in Wayne County on July 28, 1929 to the late John Henry Anderson and Sally Ann Anderson. She was wife of the late Max C. Isler, and was preceded in death by a son, Max C. Isler Jr. Graveside services were held Friday, April 25 at 2 p.m. from Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Mitchell officiating. Mrs. Isler is survived by three children, Phyllis Thigpen of Leesville, S.C., Fred Isler and wife, Cheri, of LaGrange, Penny Gregory and husband, Rodney, of LaGrange; two sisters, Sadie Sullivan of Patetown, Lois Bailey of Orlando, Fla.; three brothers, Paul Anderson of Pikeville, Robert Anderson and Melvin Anderson, both of Elroy; two granddaughters, Angie Swiecki and Becky Smith; two grandsons, Mark Gregory and Steven Corbett; and three great-grandchildren, Allison Swiecki, C.J. MARGARET S. POWELL Margaret Esther Sasser Powell, 73, of Goldsboro, died Monday, April 28. Mrs. Powell was born in Wayne County on September 30, 1934 to the late William Albert Sasser and Minnie Killette Sasser Overton. She was an active member of Belfast Pentecostal Holiness Church. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Jones and Dr. Preston Heath officiating. Interment will be Friday, May 3 at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park with the Rev. Eddie McKeel officiating. Mrs. Powell is survived by her husband, John D. Powell; her son, John D. Powell II of Hendersonville; her daughters, Lovie Esther McKeel and husband, the Rev. Eddie McKeel, of Goldsboro, Christia "Christy" Powell Smith and husband, Richard D. Smith, of Sanford; her grandchildren, Allen D. McKeel, Lindsey McKeel, David Powell, Andrew Powell and Miles Smith; her sisters, Catherine Sykes of Goldsboro, Joyce Craft and husband, Fred, of Pikeville, Alice Hartley and husband, Pete, of Princeton; her brother, Charles Sasser and wife, Debbie, of Woodstock, Ga.; her sister-in-law, Harlene Sasser of Fremont; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, David Sasser and Tommy Sasser; and her sisters, Loretta Sasser, Hazel Seymour and Rachel Martin. ROLAND N. PRICE Roland Nathaniel Price, 81, of Goldsboro, died Sunday morning, April 27, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Mr. Price was born in Wayne County on June 21, 1926, to the late Nathan and Carrie Howell Price. He was a member of Faro Chapel PFWB Church. Funeral services were held Monday, April 28 at 7 p.m. from the chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro. A graveside service was held Tuesday morning, April 29, at Pikeville Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Beulah Crocker Price; one daughter, Linda Cherry and her husband, Walter T., of Wilmington; one son, Donnie Price and his wife, Koni, of Rosewood; three stepsons, Lester Edmundson Jr. and his wife, Grace, of Knightdale, Ron Edmundson and his wife, Evelyn, of Kenly, Todd Edmundson and his wife, Sandra, of Pikeville; one brother, Vernon Price and his wife, Elsie, of Eureka; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Melvin Peed. In addition to his parents, Mr. Price was preceded in death by two brothers, James Price and Eugene Price; and one sister, Esther Le Arnold. RALPH HAROLD WARD, COL. USAF (RET.) Col. Ralph Harold Ward died Friday, April 25, 2008. He was born October 21, 1919, in Goldsboro. He graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1937 and went to work at the Paramount Theater. In 1942, he entered the military service with basic training at the Army Chemical Warfare Center at Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. He served with the Berlin Airlift (1948-1949) in Germany, in Korea (1950-1951), and served three years in post-war Japan. He retired with the rank of colonel. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Coley Ward; two brothers, Benjamin Ward and wife, Rosemary, of Summerville, S.C., and Donald Ward and wife, Ann, of Raleigh. Preceding him in death was his father, William A. Ward and mother, Mattie Fussell Ward; two brothers, William A Ward Jr., James Ross Ward (USN Ret.); and sisters, Ellen Herring and Doris Henry. Interment services, with full military honors, were held in the Town of Stantonsburg Cemetery on Tuesday morning, April 29, followed by a memorial service at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Goldsboro with the Revs. Earl Delaney and Jean Hood officiating.
