Board of Education to amend school calendar1 May 2008 — The Wayne County Board of Education plans to amend the 2007-2008 school calendar, in order for students to have the opportunity to observe Memorial Day with their families. Students will however be required to attend school on Saturday, May 31, which will be an “Early Release” day. Official Action will be taken at the May 5 Board Meeting. “The Board of Education is sympathetic to the needs of those wishing to have Memorial Day off for students, and plans to choose the only possible solution for changing the school calendar,” states Dr. Steven Taylor, WCPS Superintendent. “Due to the limitations of the North Carolina school calendar legislation, as well as having the end of the school year upon us, the district is limited in its options for changing the 2007-2008 school calendar.” The 2007-2008 school calendar was created by a Calendar Committee that was made up of principals, teachers, parent advisory representatives, Board members, and SJAFB representation. “Had concerns been lifted about our calendar earlier in the school year, our Board would have had more options in making Memorial Day a holiday for students” states Dr. Taylor. Now that we are at the end of the school year, the Board’s only option is to have students attend school on a Saturday. Adding a day at the end of the school year is not an option, as school ends on a Friday and graduations have already been set and invitations already paid for.” “We appreciate our employees working on a normally scheduled day off to help make this calendar change successful for students,” adds Dr. Taylor. Schools that had previously scheduled Memorial Day events and educational activities will move those events to Saturday, May 31, in order for students and staff to collectively honor our nation’s military and pay tribute to those who have given their lives to protect our freedoms.
