Northern Lights Extension meeting

1 May 2008 — Northern Lights Extension and Community Association members have been busy making tote bags for abused women, quilting on the county quilt, and preparing for our participation at the May County Council and Flower Show scheduled for May 7. Our duties at the County Council will consist of providing table arrangements for the head table and registration table, giving the thought for the day, and serving refreshments for the members in attendance. On May 22, our members will participate in the International Luncheon. The theme of the luncheon is "Discovering China through the Eyes of a Child." All members will carry a covered dish while the club will provide two gallons of tea, sweet and unsweet, and a meat entrée which will serve eight to ten guests.

Seven of our members attended District Day, held at Trenton, NC. In attendance were 145 ECA members, 17 agents, and 2 guests. Our club had one first place winner in the Cultural Arts Contest. Anne Smith's story entitled "Remembrances" won the creative writing short story category. The story will be entered in State competition in October.

Christine Evans presented the program "Safe Steps." Balance problems for older adults causes the majority of seniors to seek doctor's help. Multiple medications is the main cause of falls. Medications, if used incorrectly, may lead to dizziness, weakness, or other effects.

Our May program will be given by J.R. Bravo, an enforcement officer with the gang task force at the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. He will speak on "Wayne County Gangs."

An educational tour to the NC Estuarium located on Water Street, Washington, NC, has been planned for June 18. Our members will enjoy a tour of the Estuarium, an hour and a half boat ride, and a picnic lunch at Haven's Garden, which is located on the riverfront.

Canned baked beans were collected for the House of Fordham.
