Lady Falcons notch two more wins

1 May 2008 — The Charles B. Aycock softball team improved their record with two wins this week and are in the running for top spot in the Eastern Carolina Conference.

The Lady Falcons notched another regular season softball victory against the Eastern Wayne Warriors at Eastern Wayne on Wednesday, using their bats and tenacious pitching to record a 20-0 victory.

The visiting Falcons opened up a five run lead in the first inning, and went on to score 20 runs with 18 hits against the Warriors. While holding the Warriors silent, Aycock had two more big innings, scoring seven runs in the third and eight runs in the fifth and final inning.

Aycock’s pitching crew proved too much for Eastern Wayne, who only managed three hits on the night.

In contrast, the Falcons offense was productive throughout the evening. Stevie Smith went 4 for 5 overall with 2 RBI’s. Leigh Smith went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI’s, while Tori Benton and Anna Sullivan managed 4 RBI’s each.

Brittany Ford, Emily Jordan, Cara Frederick, Jessica Hare and Amber Baker also had hits as well as 1 RBI each. Brooke Edgerton also had one hit for the Falcons.

Jordan was also the winning pitcher, holding the Warriors to 2 hits and recording three strikeouts during her 3 innings on the mound.

Autumn Pittman and Jessica Hare each pitched one inning to close out the game and continued to frustrate the Eastern Wayne hitters, keeping them to only one hit. Pittman and Hare were also credited with one strikeout each.

The win improves Aycock’s record to 15-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

The Falcons gained a win Friday night in Dudley against Southern Wayne, but they needed all their weapons to do it. Aycock used their defense to hold off a comeback attempt by the Saints, hanging on to a two run lead and defeating Southern Wayne 3 –1.

After two scoreless innings, the Falcons scored the first run of the night in the top of the third. While each team would go on to record seven hits on the night, it would be the sixth inning before anyone would cross home plate again. It was the Falcons again this time, stretching their lead to 2-0 entering the seventh inning.

Aycock would score one more run at the top of the seventh and hold off the Saints, who finally found their offense, but it was too little too late.

Stevie Savage went 2-for-4 on the night including an RBI double. Brittany Ford was 1-for-3, also hitting for a double.

Brooke Edgerton, Emily Jordan, Cara Frederick and Amber Baker were all credited with one hit each on a night when offense was secondary to defense.

Emily Jordan pitched a complete game, striking out four and walking two batters.

The Saints attempted to stage a rally in the bottom of the seventh, but were only able to produce one run.

Friday night’s win improves the Falcon’s record to 16-4 overall and 7-2 in the conference.

Their next game will be at Beddingfield at 5:00 on Wednesday.
