Tornado touchdown

17 April 2008 — The National Weather service confirmed a tornado touched down in Northern Wayne County on Saturday during a severe storm.

Though the official report cites a funnel cloud that damaged several mobile homes in the Oakwood Community near the county line, residents in the Pikeville area reported damages as well.

Trees were knocked over by what homeowner Alton Finch said was a funnel cloud. He said the storm came up quickly.

“I was out in the yard fifteen minutes before it happened and I said ‘nothing’s coming,’” said Alton.

But he and his wife went inside the house, and as the storm came up two trees toppled onto their house at 132 Duck Pond Lane.

Progress Energy also reported that the storm knocked out power for almost 1,500 residents in the Nahunta area for over an hour on Saturday.
