DAIL BRIDGES Effie Mae Coats Dail Bridges, 80, died Saturday, April 12 at Britthaven of Goldsboro. Born in Duplin County on December 13, 1927, she was the daughter of the late David Allen Coats and Annie Pearl Whitman Coats. She was a member of Ebenezer Bible Church of Fayetteville. Mrs. Bridges was preceded in death by sons, Morris Elvin and Donald Allen Dail. Graveside funeral services were held Wednesday, April 16 at 2 p.m. at the Pate Cemetery in Duplin County. Pastor Albert Bean officiated. Family members remained at the cemetery to greet friends. Ms. Bridges is survived by her daughter, Frances Grantham of Fayetteville; a brother, Troy C. Coats of Garner; a sister, Laura Wade of Pikeville; five grandchildren, Morris Dail of Goldsboro, Jennifer Dail of Goldsboro, Christopher Dail of Canada, Robert A. Grantham of Wilmington, David M. RACHEL D. CROSS Rachel Elizabeth Davis Cross, 89, of Fremont, died Saturday, April 12. Born October 8, 1918, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Cross. Funeral services were held Monday, April 14 at 7 p.m. at Joyner's Funeral Home. A graveside service was held Tuesday, April 15 at 2 p.m. in the Davis Family Cemetery, with Pastor William Holliday officiating. She is survived by four daughters, Myrtle Hamrick and husband Martin of Cary, Brenda Woodard and husband Dr. Clement B. Woodard, Kaye Sexton and husband Mike, and Darlene Cross Webb and fiancé Joe, all of Fremont; twelve grandchildren, Michael Hamrick of Cary, Keith Hamrick and wife Sharon of Wendell, Jeffrey Hamrick of New Hill, Dawn Hemp and husband John of Wilson, Renee Howard and husband Tracy of Fremont, Misty Woodard of Wilson, Charles Sexton, Jay Sexton, and John Sexton, all of Fremont, Allison Webb of Elm City, David Van Norman and Samantha Van Norman of Kinston; nine great-grandchildren; one niece; and two nephews. RALPH C. LINDSAY Ralph Clark Lindsay, 76, of Fremont, died Monday, April 14 at home. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 18 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. Dr. Richard Glosson will officiate. Burial will follow at Sasser and Talton Cemetery in Pikeville. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Born February 22, 1932, Mr. Lindsay was a member of Union Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Fremont. He was retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service and was a member of the Exchange Club. Mr. Lindsay is survived by his wife, Carolyn Howell Lindsay; three stepsons, Marvin Waddell of Pikeville, Floyd Waddell of Nashville, N.C., Lewis Penzer and his wife, Rhonda, of Fremont; one stepdaughter, Ruth Ann Sistrunk and her husband, Mike, of Richmond, Texas; two sisters, Nina Guillory and Doris Lindsay, both of Missouri; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Rebecca "Becky" Lindsay; four brothers, Carl, Robert, Roy and Junior; and one sister, Mabel Carter. JESSIE L. MOTHERSHEAD Jessie Lee Mothershead, 83, of Pikeville, died Friday, April 11 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Mothershead was born in Wilson County on Aug. 19, 1924, to the late David F. and Atsy Durham Peele. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Mothershead; son, Stephen Mason; brothers, Nelmer Peele and David Peele; sister, Eloise Fields; half-sister, Eula Watson; and a half-brother, L.D. Peele. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 13 at 7 p.m. in the Minshew-Coley Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Barry Stallings officiated. Graveside services were Monday, April 14 at 11 a.m. in the Kenly Cemetery. She is survived by her stepson, Royce Mothershead; her cousin, Kathleen Radford of Pikeville; and 10 nieces and nephews.
MARVIN L. PIERCE Marvin Leroy Pierce, 80, of Fremont, died Friday, April 11 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount. He was born in Wayne County on September 24, 1927 to the late Joshua Pierce and Annie Davis Pierce. Graveside services were Sunday, April 13 at 4 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont. J.R. PITT SR. J. R. Pitt Sr., 73, of Fayetteville, died Thursday, April 10 at his residence. The funeral was held Sunday, April 13 at 2 p.m. at Elm Grove Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, Highway 117 N., Pikeville. Pastor Kenneth Vaughn officiated, and burial followed in the Old Mill Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Minnie Bass Pitt; four daughters, Deborah Cox of Goldsboro, Amanda and her husband, Billy, Smith, Maria and her husband, Corey, Ruffin, Madeline and her husband, Darius, Pitt, all of Fremont; five sons, J.R. Jr. and his wife, Diane, Pitt of Pikeville, Monty Pitt and John Pitt, both of Goldsboro, Damarcus and his wife, Sara Pitt, of Fayetteville, and Ted and his wife, Melissa Pitt, of Houston, Texas; one sister, Audrey Coley of Goldsboro; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. KATHY C. HEAD SCOTT Kathy Head Scott of Fremont died Saturday, April 12. She was born the daughter of Jim and Valeria Hart Head of Greene County. She was preceded in death by her father, Jim Head of Snow Hill. Kathy was a member of Fremont Missionary Baptist Church in Fremont. Kathy is survived by her husband, David Lee Scott; her mother and stepfather, Valeria and H.B. Smith of Snow Hill; one brother, Larry V. Head and his wife, Sarah, of Hookerton; one sister, Loretta Head Cox and her husband, Buck, of Snow Hill; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; one stepbrother, Ben Smith and his wife, Dori; and two stepsisters, Enette Thomas and her husband, Glen, and Sonya Walker. Funeral services were held Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. from the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont with visitation afterwards. BOBBY L. SHERARD Bobby L. Sherard, 73, of New York, died Monday, April 14. Born March 4, 1935, he was preceded in death by his parents, Bossie Sherard and Ruth Ellis Sherard; sister, Clarice Lennon; and his daughter, Monique Sherard Olivieri. Services will take place Saturday, April 19 at 11 a.m. at the Bear Creek Missionary Baptist Headquarters, 1800 Slocumb St., with the Rev. Harold O. Warren and the Rev. Johnnie Sherrod officiating. Entombment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine "Gerri" Harper Sherard of the home; son-in-law, Frank Olivieri of Pikeville; grandson, Christian Sherard Olivieri of Pikeville; sisters, Carolyn Sherard of Seven Springs and Peggy Best of Goldsboro; brothers, Harold Sherard of Bowen, N.Y., and Alexander Height of Goldsboro; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be 2-7 p.m. Friday, April 18 with the family present to receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at McIntyre Funeral Home Ministries, Goldsboro. Mr. Sherard's remains will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church.
NORMA H. THOMPSON Norma Herring Thompson, 73, of Goldsboro, died Wednesday, April 16 at her home. Norma was born in Wayne County on April 7, 1935 to the late Norman Herring and Ada Martin Herring. She was married to the late James Oscar Thompson. Norma was retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company and Wayne Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be held Friday, April 18 at 2 p.m. at Pikeville Cemetery with Rev. Rex Evans officiating. Norma is survived by her daughter, Lisa Bailey and husband, Dwayne of Pikeville; her grandchildren, Jeremy Thompson, Reagan Bailey and Connor Bailey; her sisters, Lois Fleming of Pikeville, Janice Harrison and husband, Marcellus of Goldsboro and Hilda Hill of Goldsboro; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6–8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
