Cobra boys take first loss; girls blaze on

17 April 2008 — Norwayne’s baseball team lost its first game of the season this week in a battle with Eastern Wayne, while the softball team allowed no points from their opponents in three straight games.

The Norwayne faced Greenwood twice in two weeks, defeating their opponents both times.

Last Tuesday, the Cobras dealt a 15-1 loss to Greenwood. The Norwayne boys earned 11 hits in the first inning alone, and held Greenwood scoreless until the final inning.

Dustin Smith and Colin Dubose each had a double, and were 2-for-2 at the plate. Jimmy Joyner, Cameron Taylor, and Justin Barbour were also 2-for-2.

Monday, Greenwood played host to Norwayne and managed to hold down scoring a bit, but eventually fell 12-1 to the Cobras.

Price, Jones, and Hinnant each had two hits for the Cobras.

But the Norwayne boys experienced their first loss of the season at Eastern Wayne last Thursday.

The Warriors grabbed an early lead, trumping Norwayne’s one run in the first inning with three of their own. Norwayne narrowed the lead to one point by the end of the third, but the teams battled it out until the sixth inning. Eastern Wayne gained a two-run lead for the 5-3 victory.

Taylor was the leading hitter, going 2-for3 at the plate.

Meanwhile, the Norwayne girls continued their dominating trend, posting two wins over Greenwood and one against Eastern Wayne.

Tuesday, the girls stomped Greenwood with a 15-0 win in four innings.

Rachel Jordan had a double for the Lady Cobras and was 2-for-3 at bat. Brooke Bell was 2-for-3 as well, and Taylor Raye had a perfect record for her at-bats.

The ladies staged a 13-0 defeat of Eastern Wayne on Thursday, but struggled to get going. The Warriors were locked in a dead heat with the Lady Cobras, tied at zero, until the third inning. Norwayne broke the tie with two runs, and followed with seven in the fourth and four in the final inning.

Bell was 2-for-3 with a triple, and Reagan Hearndon had a triple as well for the Lady Cobras.

Norwayne faced Greenwood again on Monday, winning with a five-inning 11-0 victory this time around.

Connor Davis was the lead hitter, the only Cobra with a double for the game.

Bell was the winning pitcher, throwing for four innings and striking out all but two batters.

Norwayne has a bye on Thursday, and takes the field again Monday at home against Brogden.
