Lady Falcons' winning streak ends at Southern Wayne

17 April 2008 — The Aycock girls’ softball team broke their conference winning streak this week with a 4-2 loss to cross-county rival Southern Wayne on Friday, dropping to 4-1 in the Eastern Carolina Conference.

The Saints claimed the lead early, earning a run at the top of the first inning. The Lady Falcons didn’t score until the bottom of the third, tying the score at one.

Luck turned to Southern Wayne in the fifth inning, when missed throws by Aycock contributed to two more runs for the Saints. After adding on another run in the sixth, the Saints held a three-point advantage for the final inning.

The Aycock ladies earned a second run in the final inning, but couldn’t send enough runners to tie the score.

Brittany Ford, Leigh Smith, Cara Frederick, Anna Sullivan, and Emily Jordan all had hits for Aycock, and Ford’s single sent a runner home.

Jordan pitched all seven innings, with six strikeouts, four hits, and walking two. Jordan also had two pitches hit Southern Wayne batters.

The loss to Southern Wayne followed a non-conference victory over Greene Central on Wednesday.

The Aycock ladies took the reigns in the fifth, scoring two runs to break a 0-0 tie. Five more runs in the sixth sealed the victory for the Falcons, who held Greene Central at zero for the duration of the night.

Jordan pitched six innings for the 7-0 victory, striking out 10, walking one, and allowing only two hits. Pittman threw for the final inning with two strikeouts.

Tori Benton was the lead hitter for Aycock, scoring three runners in the fifth with a double. Benton also had a single earlier in the night. Stevie Savage had an RBI triple.

Brooke Edgerton, Frederick, and Smith each had RBI singles. Ford and Sullivan had a single each.

The Aycock girls host Kinston on Wednesday and Hunt on Friday. They travel to Eastern Wayne Tuesday, and all games begin at 7:00.
