Pikeville Board upholds Barrett's resignationBy Sarah A. Wise 10 April 2008 — After a week of uncertainty, the Town of Pikeville determined that the resignation of former Chief of Police Ken Barrett stood. Earlier this month, Chief Barrett had turned in a letter of resignation, effective March 31. He cited scheduling conflicts with the board as the primary reason for leaving the department. The board had mandated that all employees of the department, including the chief, work several nights a week and one weekend a month. Chief Barrett said the schedule did not work for him, and resigned from office. However, last week Chief Barrett told the board he wished to rescind his resignation and attempt to work things out with the board. After receiving calls from citizens, he said he wished to try and hammer out a solution. The board allowed Chief Barrett to remain with the department until Monday, when they would discuss the issue as a board. After a two-hour closed session, the board voted to uphold the resignation of the chief. Commissioner Dennis Lewis said the decision was a difficult one for the board to make, and was one of the most difficult tasks he has faced as a commissioner. The town currently has no one specific in mind for the position, and will continue to operate with the full-time and part-time employees of the department.
