10 April 2008 — CBA held its annual fashion show this week.


$11,000 reward for information

A citizen, wishing to remain anonymous, has contributed an additional $5,000.00 to the reward fund in the Silvia Benetez Morales homicide case. This increases the reward being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible to $11,000.00 above what Crime Stoppers will pay. The citizen contacted the Wayne County Sheriff’s and made this offer, expressing his concern for the victim’s family and the community.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is requesting assistance from the public in the investigation of a homicide that occurred on March 3, 2008 at 1273 Black Creek Road, Fremont, North Carolina. Silvia Benitez Morales, a 28 year old Hispanic female, was found dead in her home at approximately 3:45p.m by family members. Her 3 year old son is believed to have been in the house when the murder occurred.

The Sheriff’s Office believes the crime occurred between 1:15p.m. and 3:30p.m. on this same date. Anyone that might have been in this area and seen anything that they believe might be pertinent to this case are requested to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 919-731-1481 or Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255.

Detectives are actively pursuing any and all leads in the case, and the Sheriff’s Office has requested that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assist in the Investigation.

Wayne County Crime Stoppers will pay cash rewards for information that leads to the arrest of persons responsible for this crime. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is offering an additional $6,000.00 reward, above what Crimestoppers pays, for information leading to the arrest of responsible parties.

Det/ Sgt. Tammy Odom is the lead investigator in the case.

Arson suspect arrested

One suspect in the suspicious Aycock Birthplace fire has been arrested.

On April 4, Durwood Eugene Smith III, 17, of 502 Wooten Street, Fremont, was arrested and charged with burning of state property, and his bond was set at $100,000 secured. The fire was set on January 24 of this year. Officers of the Wayne County Sheriff's Department have been following up on leads to this case for several months; investigation has shown that other suspects are involved, and more arrests are pending.

The fire caused approximately $200,000 worth in property damage, according to reports. The damaged building was the old dwelling house of Charles B. Aycock. Wayne County Crimestoppers assisted in this case and several concerned citizens have aided in the investigation.


pikeville police report

The Pikeville Police Department issued the following citations:

Marjorie Coy Pate, 55, of Pikeville was cited for speeding on Sunday. She was charged with going 58 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Jhyme Leighe Thompson, 27, of Goldsboro was cited for failure to carry drivers’ license and no insurance on Saturday.

According to Johnston County Sheriff's Department Reports, Jamie Champion Marks, 27, of 2603 Nahunta Rd. in Pikeville has been charged with exceeding pseudo limits on Sunday, March 30 at 1:51 a.m. A bond of $750 has been set for her release.

Kimberly Denise McDuffie, 40, of 100 Little Dove Rd. in Pikeville has been charged with assault of a child under 12 on Wednesday, April 2 at 12:34 a.m. No bond was set.


False report arrest

Following an investigation by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Jeronimo Tello Runio, 26, of 5516 Circle Lane, Ayden, has been arrested and charged with filing a false report, resisting a public officer, misuse of 911 system, and assault inflicting serious injury. No bond was set.

On April 4, the Wayne County Communications Center received a 911 call describing first degree burglary and first degree kidnapping. The caller stated to the dispatcher that a woman and two small children had been kidnapped by armed gunmen who entered the residence. Deputies from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Fremont Police Department arrived and secured the scene. Det. Sgt. Farfour ascertained that Runio had assaulted the victim and filed a false report.

Calls of this nature waste law enforcement time and will not be tolerated.


Statewide burning ban

Due to hazardous forest fire conditions and the continuing drought, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources have enacted a statewide burning ban.

Storytime for preschoolers

Preschool story time for children ages 2-5 is held at the Fremont Library on Monday mornings at 10 a.m. Children are invited to come and participate in songs, craft projects, and the reading of fun books.


Fremont Free Clinic

The Fremont People's Free Clinic is held every third Saturday of the month, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at 107 Ward Street. Please come fasting if you would like your labs checked.
