Lady Falcons fight hard to keep record10 April 2008 — After a hard-fought victory this week over conference rival Beddingfield, the Aycock girls’ softball team maintained their perfect conference record, and emerged 12-2 overall. The Aycock girls had a 4-0 victory at North Johnston on Wednesday. The Falcon defense kept the Panthers from capitalizing on any of their six hits and held their score at zero for the duration. Starting pitcher Autumn Pittman went for three innings, with four hits and one strikeout. Emily Jordan returned to the mound after a week-long hiatus for the final four innings, throwing four strikeouts, walking two, and allowing two runs. At the plate, the Falcons were equally strong with six hits, four of which translated to runs for the Aycock girls. Leigh Smith had three hits, including an RBI double. Tori Benton, Stevie Savage, and Amber Baker each had hits, and Baker sent a teammate in with her solo double. Aycock’s toughest matchup of the week was Friday night, when they battled Beddingfield, the only other undefeated team in the conference. After a fifteen-inning battle over three and a half hours, the Falcons scored a run on an RBI double from Benton for the win. Beddingfield had seized an early lead, and jumped to 2-0 at the top of the sixth inning. But the Lady Falcons put it in gear and tied the score during their at-bat. Seven and a half innings later, the score remained tied at 2 when Aycock got up to bat again. A single from Brittany Ford put a runner on base, and Benton’s double two batters later sent Ford home for the game-winning run. Jordan pitched all 15 innings of the game, allowing just six hits from the bruins for four runs (two earned). She walked five and struck out a whopping 20. Ford, Savage, and Smith all had three hits apiece, and Ford and Savage each earned a double. Anna Sullivan had two hits, and Benton’s solo hit was the game-winning double. The Falcon ladies had another victory over a Wilson County opponent on Tuesday, downing Fike 8-2. Aycock started off on top with one run in the first inning. But at the bottom of the inning, the umpire called an illegal pitch on Aycock’s Pittman, sending a runner on third home to tie the score. Aycock got the lead back in the third, scoring two more runs. Fike didn’t score again until the fifth, but by that time the Falcons already had three more runs. Pittman was the starting pitcher for Aycock, going five innings and striking out five. She had three hits and two runs (one earned), and walked none. Jordan threw for the last two, striking out four. Four Lady Falcons had multiple hits. Pittman was 2-for-4 and sent three runners across the plate. Sullivan also had two hits, including a double, and had two RBI. Ford and Smith each had two hits as well. Savage had an RBI on her solo single, and Edgerton had RBI double for her only hit. Frederick had a double, and Amber Baker also had a hit. The ladies host Greene Central on Wednesday and Southern Wayne on Friday. They travel to Kinston Tuesday night.
