WCC honor society inducts new members

3 April 2008 — Forty-three students have been accepted into Wayne Community College’s Upsilon Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges in the spring 2008 semester.

Phi Theta Kappa members represent the top 10 percent of students enrolled in two-year schools. To be invited into the society, WCC students must show academic achievement with a minimum of a 3.5 grade point average. They must have completed a minimum of 16 hours of course work leading to an associate degree.

The new members and their majors are listed below (by community in which they live).

Eureka: Tony N. Wellington, Associate in Science

Pikeville: JR George Bravo, Criminal Justice; Rhonda C. Harris, Associate in Arts; Ronald Wayne Lynn, Associate in Science; Shelby Catherine McClure, Accounting; Patricia Marvette Pridgen, Associate in Arts; and Karlie Jean West, Dental Hygiene

During the induction ceremony, chapter president Michelle Rogers, an associate in arts/college transfer major who lives in Pikeville, was honored with a plaque in appreciation of her service and chapter co-president Christen Price, a graduate with an associate in arts/elementary, middle and special education degree who lives in Dudley, was presented the Upsilon Chi Citizenship Award.

Chapter advisors Tara Bass, English instructor and Honors Program coordinator, and Lorie Waller, co-op/cooperative programs/job referral coordinator, announced that they were stepping down and that Thomas Garrou, an instructor in the college’s Continuing Education Division and a former chapter president, will replace them.
