Norwayne's TSA gives back to St. Joseph's3 April 2008 — Students at Norwayne Middle recently undertook a service project for a local church. Each year, Norwayne’s chapter of Technology Students of America (TSA) performs a service project for a group in the community. This year, the group decided to give back to a local church that has helped them out. A few years ago, St. Joseph United Methodist Church in Pikeville remodeled their fellowship hall, and donated several old pews to the group for use in woodworking projects. This year, the group decided to recycle the old pews into a project that the church could use. Students from several classes worked to construct a display case for an antique quilt the church owns. The case is built primarily from the wood in the old pew benches, and was completely constructed by students over several months. The group donated the case on Easter Sunday. TSA students Rebecca Pate and Keli Gerken photographed the construction project as they went, and are compiling a book documenting the project for a Construction Challenge competition in Greensboro later this month.
