deaths & funerals3 April 2008 MARY H. ARTIS Mary "Baby Mae" Hicks Artis, 82, of Fremont, died Friday, March 28 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 1 at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, with Elder Willie Lockwood officiating. Burial was in the Forte Cemetery of Eureka. She is survived by her husband, Mack W. Artis; two children; and three grandchildren.
SARAH W. BRADSHAW Sarah Willis Bradshaw, 54, of Fremont, died Sunday, March 30. Sarah was born in Morehead City on November 11, 1953, and was preceded in death by her father, Curtis F. Willis, and a son. Sarah was a dental hygienist at O'Berry Center for 27 years. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 2 at 7 p.m. at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, 610 Mount Carmel Church Road, Pikeville. The family received friends following the service in the fellowship hall and other times at the home. The Rev. David Hollowell officiated. Interment will be today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. in Elmwood Cemetery, 400 Vance St., Fremont. Surviving is her husband, Larry Bradshaw; a son, Kevin P. Effler and his wife, Janine; and her grandchildren, Alexis and Jacob of Goldsboro; her mother, Gladys Cox Willis of Fremont; an uncle, Clifton Cox and his wife, Connie, of Brunson, S.C.; and two cousins, Catherine C. Bozard and her husband, Kenny, and their son, Kyle, all of Brunson, S.C., and Cheryll Hamm and her husband, Art, and their son, Ryon, of Summerville, S.C. TOMMY C. LEWIS SR. Tommy C. Lewis Sr., 73, of Goldsboro, died Monday, March 31 at Duke University Hospital. He was born in Nash County to the late Leonard and Anna Nobles Lewis. A retired master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, he was also retired from Firestone. He was also an active member of the Goldsboro Moose Lodge. Memorial services will be held today (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Everett officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount. He is survived by his wife, Jean Lewis; two sons, Tommy C. Lewis Jr. and wife, Terry, of Morehead City, Daniel Lewis and wife, Adelade, of Pikeville; five grandchildren, Jennifer Minshew and husband, Dwayne, Stephanie Rarick and husband, Donnie, Damian and Brian Vance, Jesse Watson; three great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Kyia Minshew, Cody Rarick; brother, James Lewis and wife, Louise, of Rocky Mount; and two sisters, Athlene Bone of Rocky Mount, Joanne Grubbs and husband, Adrian, of Deep Run. Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his precious daughter, Kimberly Lewis; and his siblings, Bennie, Linwood and Marian. The family will be receiving friends immediately following the memorial service on Thursday evening at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home. BETTY M. PENNINGTON Betty McLawhon Pennington, 79, of Goldsboro, died Monday morning, March 31, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Betty was born in Greene County on December 10, 1928 to the late Mark H. McLawhon and Augusta Dixon McLawhon. She was married to the late Milford Earl Pennington. Betty had worked as a teacher with both Wayne County and Johnston County school systems and had also retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 10 years of service. She was a member of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Bailey and the Rev. Barry Williamson officiating. Interment will be Friday, April 4 at 11 a.m. in Falling Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery in the Grantham Community. Betty is survived by her son, Rex Pennington and wife, Jan, of Goldsboro; her daughters, Kim Corbitt and husband, Charles, of Nahunta, Terri Huffman and husband, Cecil, of Rocky Mount, Penny Jo Howell and husband, Johnnie, of Pikeville; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Mildred Harris of Oceanside, Calif., Ellen Benton of Troy Ill.; and her brothers, Jimmy McLawhon of Goldsboro, Ricky McLawhon of Mount Olive, Billy McLawhon of Pikeville. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Benny Mack Pennington; her sister, Jean Underwood; and her brothers, Mark Dixon McLawhon, Joe McLawhon and Charles McLawhon. FITZHUGH M. PIERCE Fitzhugh Melvin Pierce, 72, of Goldsboro, died Tuesday, April 1 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro. Born in Pender County, he was the son of Eula Mae Foss Pierce of Leland, N.C., and the late Bryant Henry Pierce. He also was preceded in death by two sons, James Pierce and Danny Ray Pierce. He attended Love Memorial Baptist Church and was a retired mechanic. Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Toler and the Rev. Ira Williford officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Eula Mae Pierce; three sons, William Pierce of Rocky Point, Elton Pierce and Alton Pierce, both of Leland; two daughters, Teresa Ann Harrelson of Fremont, Sandra Mae Ridlehoover of Lexington, S.C.; a brother, W.T. LINDA W. SMITH Linda West Smith, 58, of Goldsboro, died Friday, March 28 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Born November 10, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Eva Jones and Arthur C. West Sr. and was married to Randy Smith. A funeral was held on Monday, March 31 at 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with Pastor Bobby Heath officiating. Burial followed at Wayne Memorial Park. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Fields and husband, Ricky, of Pikeville; two brothers, Glenn West and wife, Donna, of Louisburg and A.C. West Jr. and wife, Carol, of Dudley; two sisters, Marie Barnett and husband, Wayne, of Rosewood, and Blanche Pope of Four Oaks; and three grandchildren, Christopher Stallings, currently stationed in Iraq, Tiffany Stallings of Pikeville and Sydney Fields of Pikeville. EUGENE STONE Eugene Stone, 73, of Goldsboro, died this morning (Thursday, April 3) at Wayne Memorial Hospital. The family will be at the home of Debbie Kimbrell, 6069 Wayne Memorial Drive, Pikeville. Arrangements are incomplete with Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
JOSEPH M. WHITLEY Joseph Marion Whitley, 82, of Snow Hill, died Tuesday evening, April 1, at his residence following a battle with cancer. A native of Greene County, he was born the son of Joseph M. Whitley and Hattie Ann Kearney Whitley. Mr. Whitley was a veteran of the U.S. Army and member of Fort Run PFWB Church. He had retired with R.N. Rouse and Company in Goldsboro and had also actively farmed tobacco for many years. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service with the Rev. Larry Turlington officiating. Interment will follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery with military honors. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Marie Whitley Heath; and a grandson, Edward Heath Jr. His survivors includes his wife, Vayria "Bunnie" Fields Whitley of the home; children, Linda Whitley Daniels and husband, Rufus, of Farmville, Joe Whitley and wife, Sharon, of Pikeville and Gerald Whitley of New Bern; a sister, Eula Moore of Snow Hill; stepdaughters, Sharlene Gurley Register and husband, Tommy, of Goldsboro, Tammy Gurley Tyner and husband, Dwight, of Pikeville; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
