Mount Olive Tribune joins Merrill family
3 April 2008 — The publisher of the News Leader has purchased the Mount Olive Tribune.
Barry Merrill, along with his wife, Marilyn, completed the purchase of the Mount Olive paper from Robert Woronoff of Raleigh on Monday. The sale was effective Tuesday, April 1.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Tribune will become part of the Merrills’ company, Merrill Publishing Company.
While the two Merrill papers serve smaller markets and both were founded about 30 years ago, The Tribune serves Wayne County’s second largest town and has a history of over 100 years service to southern Wayne and northern Duplin counties.
The Brock Family of Mount Olive sold the paper, along with its printing operations, to the Raleigh News and Observer Company in the 1970s. Many weekly newspapers in the region, including the two News Leader papers, were printed on the Tribune presses in the 1980s.
When the News and Observer Company was purchased by McClatchey Newspapers nine years ago, Mr. Woronoff received The Tribune and another printing operation, Benson Newspaper Publishing in exchange for News and Observer stock that he owned.
Two years ago Mr. Woronoff sold Benson Newspaper Publishing after consolidating the printing operations along with the presses from Mount Olive.
Mr. Merrill said the plans for the three papers will involve consolidating some of the functions for the three papers.
While the plans will have all of the existing Tribune employees coming to work for Merrill Publishing, some will work in other offices of the company.
“This will effectively double the size of our company and strengthen all our operations,” said Mr. Merrill. “We will produce better papers after this effective merger of our two operations.”
The Merrills purchased the Princeton News Leader and Wayne-Wilson News Leader in 1982. In the 1990s they owned and operated The Johnstonian Sun of Selma for five years before selling the newspaper.
