Ready for Daffodil Festival27 March 2008 — Fremont's Daffodil Festival will be held this Saturday. This increases the reward being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible to $11,000.00 above what Crime Stoppers will pay. The citizen contacted the Wayne County Sheriff’s and made this offer, expressing his concern for the victim’s family and the community. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is requesting assistance from the public in the investigation of a homicide that occurred on March 3, 2008 at 1273 Black Creek Road, Fremont, North Carolina. Silvia Benitez Morales, a 28 year old Hispanic female, was found dead in her home at approximately 3:45p.m by family members. Her 3 year old son is believed to have been in the house when the murder occurred. The Sheriff’s Office believes the crime occurred between 1:15p.m. and 3:30p.m. on this same date. Anyone that might have been in this area and seen anything that they believe might be pertinent to this case are requested to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 919-731-1481 or Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255. Detectives are actively pursuing any and all leads in the case, and the Sheriff’s Office has requested that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assist in the Investigation. Wayne County Crime Stoppers will pay cash rewards for information that leads to the arrest of persons responsible for this crime. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is offering an additional $6,000.00 reward, above what Crimestoppers pays, for information leading to the arrest of responsible parties. Det/ Sgt. Add $5 for shipping and handling by mail. pikeville police reportThe Pikeville Police Department reported the following incident: Ransome James Howell, 52, of Tina Ave. reported that a checkbook and debit cards had been stolen. The suspect, Walter Barrett Phibbs, had allegedly contacted the home and said he had possession of the checkbook. The suspect had used the cards and checks for an estimated $400 of expenses. Warrants were issued for Mr. Phibbs on the charges of misdemeanor larceny, forging and uttering, and obtaining money by false pretenses.Join Curves for freeCurves of Fremont will participate in an annual food drive donating all contributions to our local food banks. The stone monument is 2 ft. 8 in. wide, 10 in. thick and 3 ft. 6 inches tall and lettered on both sides. Names can be placed on this monument in honor or in memory of a Fremont resident. A minimum donation of $350.00 is requested to cover the fees for the engraving and to help maintain the memorial park. A special ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 29th after the opening ceremonies of the 22nd Annual Fremont Daffodil Festival recognizing new names honored on the monument. Storytime for preschoolersPreschool story time for children ages 2-5 is held at the Fremont Library on Monday mornings at 10 a.m. Children are invited to come and participate in songs, craft projects, and the reading of fun books.
