Aycock boys bounce back from hard losses

27 March 2008 — The Aycock baseball team wavered between wins and losses this week, splitting their weekly record with two wins and two losses.

On Thursday night, the Aycock boys just couldn’t gain any momentum behind their efforts against the Eastern Wayne Warriors.

The Warriors came out swinging, and scored their first run at the top of the first inning. They held the lead until the bottom of the second, when the Falcons scored two runs to take a 2-1 advantage.

However, those runs were the only ones the Falcons earned all night. The Warriors swiftly regained a lead with two runs in the third inning, and sent a whopping six runners across the plate in the fourth inning. After a three-run fifth inning for Eastern Wayne with no rebuttal from Aycock’s side, the game was called on the ten run rule.

Aycock only had four hits on Thursday, and stranded six runners on base. Bryant Hill was the leading hitter for the Falcons, going 2-for-3 with a double. Zach Wright and Jordan Carr had a hit each for Aycock, and John Taylor and Tyler Ruffin each had an RBI.

Three Falcons took the plate for Aycock in the five-inning affair. Eric Dubose started at the mound, throwing for just over three innings. He had two strikeouts, eight hits, four walks, and five runs. Jimmy Kearney finished out the fourth inning, allowing eight hits and six runs. Josh Martin threw for the final inning with one strikeout, one hit, one run and walking two.

But Saturday was a new day for the Falcons, who bounced back from a seven-run deficit against South Central to seize an 11-7 victory in the first game of the George Whitfield Invitational.

South Central gained seven runs against the Falcons in three innings, but this time the boys didn’t panic, and halted South Central right there. The Falcons began scoring runs in the third inning, sending three across the plate. They tacked on three more in the fourth and five in the sixth, while holding South Central steady at seven runs.

Hill was the starting pitcher Saturday, with three strikeouts and one walk. He allowed eight hits in the first four innings and five earned runs. Martin took the mound for the final three innings, throwing one strikeout and allowing no hits.

Connor Narron was the leading hitter for the Falcons, making contact on both of his at-bats. Narron had a triple and two RBI. Carr also had two hits, including a double and three RBI. Ruffin was 2-for-3 at the plate.

But the Falcons ended up on the no-runs end of a 4-0 game against West Craven Monday night.

The game was tied at zero until the fourth inning, when West Craven earned all four of their runs. But the Aycock batters just weren’t performing in Mondays game, with only three hits for the night, none of which ended in a run.

Will Edgerton, Narron, and Ruffin each had a hit for Aycock.

The Falcons did have a solid stride with their pitching. Jesse Randolph took the plate for the first five innings, throwing two strikeouts and walking two. Randolph also allowed nine hits and four runs.

The Aycock boys ended the tournament with a win, however, finishing 9-0 against D.H. Conley on Tuesday afternoon.

The boys were scoring from the get-go, banging out 13 hits for the game. After scoring their first run in the first inning, they added on two more in the second and an impressive six in the third.

The Falcons then held steady at eight while holding D.H. Conley at zero. The boys added a final run in the sixth inning for the victory.

Dubose was the winning pitcher, throwing all seven innings. He had seven strikeouts, allowed three hits and walked five.

The boys showed off their battings strengths once again on Tuesday with five Falcons having more than one hit. Zach Wright led the team, going 3-for-4 with a two-run triple and a two-run single. Hill was 2-4 with a double, and Edgerton, Ruffin, and Narron also had two hits apiece.

The boys take a hiatus for the rest of their spring break and return to regular play on April 1, when they host Southern Wayne.
