Quick wins for Cobras over Brogden, Dillard20 March 2008 — As the Cobras prepare for a week without games, both the softball and baseball team continued their dominance this week. In three out of four games, the Cobra teams trampled their opponents in a mere three innings of play. The baseball team had the closest margin in their five-inning, 17-1 defeat of Brogden Monday afternoon. The Cobras tallied five runs in the first inning, and added on four more in the second. They dropped to a consistent two runs for each of the next two innings, and then burst forward with four more in the final inning. Meanwhile, the three Cobra pitchers held Brogden’s batters scoreless until the final inning, when they chalked their solo run. Cameron Taylor was the starting pitcher for Norwayne on Monday, throwing for the first two innings. In that time, Taylor had five strikeouts and allowed one hit. Kyle Walker relieved Taylor and threw for the next two innings. He had three strikeouts, and walked two batters. Dylan Smith pitched the final inning, earning three strikeouts as well, and allowing one hit and one run. Adam Pate led the Norwayne boys at bat, making contact on four of his five visits to the plate. Pate was the only Cobra batter with a double. Bryant Stafford was 2-for-3, Walker was 3-for-4, and Kyle Powell was 2-for-2. The Cobras’ victory on Monday came on the heels of a 22-0 victory over Dillard last Thursday. The boys had an especially strong second inning, earning all but one of their runs during that extensive inning. Every batter in the starting lineup earned at least two runs during the second inning. Collin Dubose and Stafford were both 2-for-2 at bat. Dubose and Hunter Britt each had a double. Taylor was 2-for-3, and Pate was 2-for-4. The Lady Cobras had a big week as well, earning a total of 61 runs in two games. The ladies had a 31-0 victory in three innings against Dillard last Thursday. The girls had sent runners across home 14 times by the end of the first inning, and had added seven to the score by the top of the third. Brooke Bell led the ladies at bat with a triple and a double for her two at-bats. Brittany Williams and Taylor Cox each had two doubles. Amber Rose had hits on all four of her at-bats, and Williams, Ivy Hartzell, and Caroline Riggs were each 2-for-2. Hartzell, Rachel Jordan, and Reagan Herndon each contributed a double. Connor Davis was the starting pitcher on Thursday, with two strikeouts in one inning. Savannah Briggs relieved Davis, and had three strikeouts in the following two innings. The Cobra defense knocked out three outs in three batters for all three innings played. The girls followed up with another three-inning affair on Monday afternoon, taking down Brogden 30-0. Jenna Van Horne had a double for her solo hit of the day, and Courtnei Gilbert contributed a homerun. After the Cobras return from Spring Break, their schedule will resume with a home match against Greenwood on April 1.
