Falcons shut out Kinston, shut down Hunt20 March 2008 — The Aycock baseball team faltered early this week, falling for the second time to North Lenior, but recovered with wins against Kinston and Hunt. The boys had their second loss of the season to North Lenior on Wednesday, when the Falcons were defeated 12-6. North Lenior claimed an early lead, earning seven runs in the first two innings while holding the Falcons at 0. A big third inning for Aycock closed in the gap a bit, with four Falcon runs bringing the score to 7-3. In the final inning, with the score at 9-6, North Lenior staked a final claim to the win with three more runs. Connor Narron was the lead hitter for Aycock, going 2-4 with a double and a homerun. Narron also had an RBI. Stephen Strouse was 2-3. Zach Wright was 1-3, with a double and an RBI on his solo hit. Bryant Hill had one hit with two RBI. Four Aycock boys took the mound on Wednesday. Jordan Carr started things off and had five hits, five earned runs, and three walks in his one and one-third innings. Hill finished out the second inning and pitched for two more, with one hit. Will Edgerton threw for the next fifth and sixth innings, with two strikeouts, four hits, and three earned runs. Wright finished out the game, and had one strikeout, four hits, and three earned runs in the final inning. In their first of two conference games this week, the Aycock boys slated a 4-0 defeat of Kinston on Friday. The score stood tied at zero until the bottom of the third inning, when Wright’s double sent two Falcons home. A home run from sophomore Tyler Ruffin bumped the Aycock lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning, and an RBI double from Carr tallied the fourth and final run for Aycock in the sixth. Hill was 2-for-4 at bat, and Narron was 1-1. Dubose led off at the mound, and pitched five of the seven innings. He had six strikeouts and one walk, as well as two hits. Jimmy Kearney finished out the last two innings with two strikeouts and one hit. On Tuesday evening, the Hunt team attempted to pose a strong challenge to the team, but Aycock stayed in the lead much of the game, and seized a two-point victory. Hunt earned the first run, scoring in the first inning, while the Falcons didn’t cross home until the top of the second. The boys tacked on two more runs in the following two innings. After the boys jumped to a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning, Hunt briefly gained an advantage, sending four runners across the plate to earn a one-point lead. But the Aycock offense answered with three runs in the final inning, while the defense held Hunt for the win. Randolph was the winning pitcher on Tuesday night, going for six of the seven innings. Kearney had the save, pitching the final inning. Narron and Carr led the Falcons at bat, going 2-for-4. Narron had two RBI while Carr had one. Strouse and Taylor each had one hit and one RBI. Tuesday’s win puts the boys at 6-2 overall, with a 3-0 conference record. The Falcons will host Eastern Wayne on Thursday, and participate in an Easter Tournament at Kinston over Spring Break. They will return to regular play on April 1, when they host Southern Wayne.
