Pikeville's Chief Barrett resigns

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer

13 March 2008 — By the end of this month, the town of Pikeville may be hiring another key leader – a new police chief.

Ken Barrett, the current chief of the Pikeville department, turned in a letter of resignation on Friday. He will stay through the remainder of the month.

Mayor Herb Sieger said the resignation came about after a board revision of the department’s schedule. The board had revised the chief’s schedule to include five or six nights a week and one weekend a month, a move that Chief Barrett said did not fit in with his schedule.

“We have a limited police staff,” said Mayor Sieger, “and we didn’t think it was an excessive amount of nights and weekends for him to work.”

However, Chief Barrett stated that the schedule did not work for him, and turned in a letter of resignation.

Mayor Sieger made it clear that the resignation was solely Chief Barrett’s decision.

“We have no axe to grind with Ken, I think he’s a nice guy,” he said. “We didn’t ask him to resign, and there was no pressure to resign.”

The board does not yet know who will fill the vacant position. Mayor Sieger said that the board is looking at potential people to fill the spot, but does not have anyone particular in mind right now.

He noted that the town operated for a while without a chief after Eddie Lewis left Pikeville.

“The main thing we need is coverage of the area,” he said. “And I think we can still get that with the department we have and a little part-time help.”
