CARL R. "BOB" GURLEY, JR. PRINCETON – Carl R. “Bob” Gurley, Jr., age 66, owner and operator of Gurley Seeds and Gurley Auto Sales, died Thursday morning, March 13 at his home. He was born July 31, 1941 in Johnston County to the late Carl Roberts and Martitia Holt Gurley. He was a member the first graduating class of the NC State Agriculture Institute. Bob was also a member of the Princeton United Methodist Church and the Princeton Lions Club. 13 March 2008
CARL BARNETT Carl Barnett, 79, of Fremont, died Tuesday, March 11 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Born July 20, 1928, Mr. Barnett was a member of Fremont Free Will Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 13 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The Rev. Jerry Evans will officiate. He is survived by two sons, Ike Proctor of Richmond, Va., Ronald C. Barnett and his wife, Delores, of Georgia; two daughters, Debra Mill and her husband, Henry, of Virginia, Brenda Mills and her husband, Tim, of Virginia; his caretaker of 15 years, Leah Bass of the home; two sisters, Virginia Ennis of Jacksonville, N.C., Helen Carney of Tennessee; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. BROWNIE H. JERNIGAN Brownie Hargrove Jernigan, 82, of Kinston, died Wednesday, March 5. She was employed at Caswell Center. She was a member of the former Faith Free Will Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jennings E. Jernigan; three brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include her daughter, Dolores Jernigan Lee and husband, David, of Dover; sons, Bobby Jernigan and wife, Civel, of Kinston, Ed "Bud" Jernigan and special friend, Edwina, of Wilson, Sherwood Jernigan and wife, Carolyn, of Mount Olive, Donald Jernigan and wife, Leslie, of Kinston, Rex Jernigan and wife, Katherine, of Pikeville, Ray Jernigan and wife, Rhea, of LaGrange, Doug Jernigan and wife, Diane, of LaGrange; sister Lettie Lou Proctor of Elm City; 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. BLANCHE DRIVER LEWIS Blanche Driver Lewis, 80, of Wilson, died Sunday, March 9. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Maplewood Cemetery, Section G, Wilson. WILLIAM MILLARD JR. William Millard Jr., 71, of Stantonsburg, died Tuesday, March 11 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Goldsboro. Born June 16, 1936, Mr. Millard served his country in the U.S. Army Medics Corps. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 15, at 1 p.m. from the First Baptist Church, 108 Baker St., Eureka, with the Rev. Odell Forte officiating. Public viewing will be held on Friday, March 14, 2008, at the Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St., Goldsboro, from 2 to 7 p.m. Interment will follow the funeral in the Sherrod Family Cemetery in the Watery Branch Community. He is survived by his wife, Lettie Pecolia, of the home; six children, Vicki Millard-Cobb of Waldorf, Md., William "Clint" Millard of Baltimore, Md., Monica McClendon of Schweinfurt, Germany, Kevin Millard of Washington, D.C., and Salanda Newsome and Sandra Newsome, both of Eureka; three sisters, Carrie Frances-Cox and Effie Dees, both of Goldsboro, and Lila McHenry of Columbia, S.C.; and two brothers, Jackie Millard of Eureka and Maryland Ransome of Goldsboro. The family will be receiving friends and other family members at the home. JOHN D. STRICKLAND SR. John Dorsey Strickland Sr., 78, of Goldsboro, died Thursday, March 6 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro. Mr. Strickland was born in Wayne County on January 22, 1930 to the late Dorsey and Myrtle Collier Strickland. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Strickland retired from General Electric with 38 years of service. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro. Interment followed at Progressive Church Cemetery in Princeton. Dr. Worth Worley officiated. He is survived by his wife, Janice Worley Strickland; two sons, John Dorsey Strickland Jr. and his wife, Jackie, of Seven Springs and Jeffrey Wayne Strickland and his wife, Debra, of Banner Elk; three brothers, Donald Strickland of Goldsboro, Charles Strickland and his wife, Margaret, of Pikeville and Ray Strickland and his wife, Betty, of Goldsboro; three sisters, Dorothy Colie of Kinston, Betty Littleton of Pikeville and Kay Peele and her husband, Jimmy, of Pikeville; four granddaughters, Pamela Grady and her husband, Bennie, April Strickland, Heather Strickland, and Amanda Strickland; one step-grandson, Brian Kornegay; and one aunt, Ethel Collier of Pikeville. EARL FRANKLIN TUCKER Earl Franklin Tucker, 71, of Pikeville, died Friday morning, March 7, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Earl was born in Wayne County on December 12, 1936 to the late Joe Jesse Tucker and Trudy Mae Jernigan Tucker. Funeral services were Sunday, March 9 at 4 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Steve Jones officiated. Burial followed in the Pikeville Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Eunice Pierce Tucker; his daughter, Sandra Saunders and husband, Chris, of Pikeville; his sons, Danny Earl Tucker and Billy Joe Tucker of Pikeville; his sisters, Jenny Evans of Goldsboro, Judy Harper of Grantham, Eloise Benton of Pikeville, Liza Aycock of Chesapeake, Va., Sherby Hines of Goldsboro; his brother, Joe Jesse Tucker Jr. of Grantham; and his grandchildren, Michael Creech of Goldsboro, Samantha Beaty and husband, Wayne, of Fremont, Zachary B.
