Cobras take down Eagles13 March 2008 — The Norwayne softball and baseball teams continued their winning streaks this week. Both team had victories over visiting Rosewood and Grantham. On the back field, the Norwayne boys had an 8-4 win over Rosewood Thursday evening. The Eagles started off stronger, earning two runs in the first inning and holding the Cobras at zero. But those two runs were the last for Rosewood until the sixth inning. Meanwhile, Norwayne took hold at the plate, earning three runs in the second inning and four more in the third. After tacking on an eighth run in the fifth, the Cobras held steady throughout the remainder of the game, finishing with the win. Collin Dubose pitched the first five and a half innings for the Cobras, with nine strikeouts. He also had four hits and one earned run. Cameron Taylor relieved Dubose in the sixth inning, and had one hit. Bryant Stafford and Dubose both had doubles for the Cobras, and Chris Dawson was 2-3 at bat. Norwayne followed up with a 4-1 win against Grantham on Monday to put the boys at 3-0 for the season. The Cobras’ pitching and defense held Grantham at zero until the seventh inning. By that point, the Norwayne boys had posted four runs of their own. Dubose was the winning pitcher for Norwayne, going for four innings. Dubose had two strikeouts, one hit, and walked four batters. Taylor and Stafford also took the mound Thursday and threw for a little over an inning apiece. Dubose was also a key player at bat, earning two hits with a double and a single. Meanwhile, the Lady Cobras had two double-digit games this week. Thursday, the Norwayne girls had a 11-0 win over Rosewood on Thursday afternoon. By the end of the second inning, the Cobras had garnered eight runs, and they tacked on two in the final two innings. Meanwhile, fierce pitching from Brooke Bell, combined with the Cobra defense, earned three outs in three batters for all five innings. Bell had 10 strikeouts and one hit on Thursday. Bell, Connor Davis, and Misty Edwards each were 2-3 at the plate, and Amber Rose was 1-1. The ladies had another big win on Monday with a 12-2 defeat of Grantham. Grantham started off in the lead, earning one run in the first inning while the Cobras stayed at zero through the first two. But the Lady Cobras turned the game in their favor at the bottom of the third as they earned five more runs. After a repeat performance in the fourth and one m ore run from Grantham, the ladies slowed things down a bit and earned two more runs in the final two innings. Ivy Hartzell was the big batter on Monday, with a homerun and a double. Davis and Courtnei Gilbert each had a triple, and Jenna Van Horne had a double. The Cobras have two away games this week.
