Lady Falcons bump off North Johnston, North Lenoir13 March 2008 — The Aycock softball team bumped up to 4-0 this week with two non-conference wins. The ladies hosted North Johnston on Wednesday, finishing with an 8-4 win over the Panthers. The Falcons started off on top, taking the lead with one run in the first inning. But the real shining moment for the Aycock offense was the second inning, in which the girls earned five of their eight runs. The final two runners came across the plate during the third inning. Meanwhile, pitchers Emily Jordan and Amber Pittman held the North Johnston girls scoreless, allowing only one hit between the two of them in six innings. The Panthers scored four runs in the final inning under pitcher Ashley Shingleton. Leigh Smith was the lead hitter for Aycock on Wednesday, going 3-4 with a double and two RBI. Tori Benton also had a double, and sent a teammate home. Anna Sullivan was a perfect 2-2, and Shingleton was 2-3 with an RBI. Pittman was 1-3 with a double and an RBI on her solo hit. Brittany Ford and Cara Frederick were each 1-4, and Ford had an RBI. Jordan was the starting pitcher for Aycock on Wednesday, and had six strikeouts and one walk in three innings. Pittman took the mound for the next three innings, with five strikeouts and one hit. Shingleton pitched the final inning, and had two strikeouts, four hits, and four runs. Aycock followed up with an 8-0 victory at home against North Lenior on Thursday. While holding their opponent scoreless on four hits, the Lady Falcons recorded 11 hits, with eight runners coming across the plate. Benton and Stevie Savage each had doubles that sent in two runners each. Smith had one RBI, and was 2-4 Thursday. Sullivan had one hit and one RBI. Shingleton was 2-3, Ford was 2-4, and Frederick was 1-3. Jordan pitched six innings for the Falcons, with six strikeouts, one walk, and four hits. Pittman pitched the final inning, and had one strikeout. Aycock’s conference opener against Beddingfield was scheduled for Tuesday night, but the game was postponed because of the Beddingfield girls’ basketball team’s continued presence in the NCSHAA state tournament. The ladies will travel to North Lenoir on Wednesday, and host Kinston on Friday.
