Norwayne's roaring spring sports start

6 March 2008 — The Norwayne softball team started out their season with a steamrolling of Mount Olive Middle Monday afternoon. The Cobras posted a 28-0 win in two innings of play.

The girls played tough on both sides of the ball. Pitcher Rachel Jordan had six strikeouts against Mount Olive. Additionally, the ladies had 15 hits on their way to scoring their 28 runs.

Jordan and Jenna Van Horne each got hits on both of their trips to the plate. Brooke Bell and Connor Davis were each 3-4, and Ivy Hartzell was 2-3. Courtnei Gilbert was 1-2, Amber Rose was 1-2, and Reagan Herndon was 1-1.

In a tight match-up with Mount Olive, the Norwayne baseball team came out with a win in their first season game as well. The Cobras posted a 10-9 win on Monday.

The teams battled back and forth for runs, with Mount Olive earning a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Norwayne narrowing the gap 3-2 by the end of the second inning. As the Cobras went to their final turn at bat, Mount Olive had a 8-6 lead. But the boys brought in four runs before taking the field, and held Mount Olive to two more for the win.
Cameron Taylor started things off at pitcher, going for two innings. He had two strikeouts and allowed four hits and two earned runs.

Collin Dubose took over in the third inning, and had three strikeouts during his time at the mound. Dubose also allowed six hits and six earned runs. Bryant Stafford relieved Dubose midway through the fourth inning, and pitched for the remainder of the game. Stafford had three strikes and walked two, while only allowing one hit and one earned run.

At the plate, all of the Cobra batters who got a hit also had a second one. Chris Dawson was the lead batter of the day, earning a double on one of his two hits. Jimmie Joyner, Adam Pate, Dubose, Justin Barbour, and Chris Dawson also had two hits apiece.

The Norwayne teams will host Rosewood on Thursday at 3:45.
