New coach Matthews starts season with 2-0 record

6 March 2008 — The Aycock softball team is off to a good start under a new coach, beginning their season with a 2-0 lead under the guide of Coach Brad Matthews.

After a rain delay on Tuesday, the Lady Falcons finally started off their regular season with a home match-up against Fike.

The game started off a tight contest, with neither team scoring a run in the first three innings. But the Lady Falcons broke through the barrier in high fashion, scoring five of their seven overall runs in the fourth inning.

After tacking on two more in the fifth and holding Fike at zero through seven innings, the ladies earned the victory 7-0.

Tori Benton had two of Aycock’s six hits for the day, including a double that sent in two teammates. Benton had four RBI for the game. Autumn Pittman was 1-3 with two RBI. Leigh Smith, Amber Baker, and Cara Frederick also had hits for the Falcons.

Emily Jordan started things off at the mound, pitching for five innings. Jordan struck out 11 batters, and only allowed two hits. She was relieved by Pittman, who had one hit and two strikeouts in two innings.

The ladies followed up with a 17-1 victory in five innings over Clayton Friday night.

By the end of the second inning, the Falcons had amassed 13 points while holding the Comets scoreless. The ladies tacked on four more in the fourth inning, but opted out of their fifth-inning at bat after the Comets squeaked out one run in at the top of the inning.

Cara Frederick was a big hitter on Friday, knocking out a home run and a double. Frederick was 3-4 overall and had four RBI.

Jordan had a double for Aycock on Monday with her only time at bat. Anna Sullivan was perfect at the plate, going 2-2 with one RBI. Brittany Ford, Tori Benton, and Pittman were all 2-3. Pittman had four RBI, while Ford and Benton had one apiece. Amber Baker was 1-3 with two RBI and a double.
