Young Falcon team starts season strong6 March 2008 — After winning last year’s state championship title, this year’s Aycock baseball team has some big shoes to fill. With only three returning starters, a lot of new Falcons are seeing field time in their early games, but fans haven’t been disappointed by the Aycock performance. The boys mounted a 3-0 lead in their first week of play. The Falcons had to work hard for their first win of the season Thursday afternoon. In their season-opener against Fike, the Aycock boys fell behind for the first two innings before hitting their stride in the third. Fike built up a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and the Aycock boys only squeezed out a single run in the second inning to narrow the gap. After the Demons added two more points during their third-inning at bat, the Aycock boys knocked into gear. Five runs from Aycock in the third inning shifted the game toward Aycock, who maintained a one-point advantage throughout the fourth inning. The Falcons added six more runs before the end of the game, and held the Demons at six for a 12-6 victory. Jesse Randolph started out at the mound for Aycock and pitched the first four innings. He had one strikeout, seven hits, and four earned runs. Eric Dubose took over for the next two, with two strikeouts, one hit, and one earned run. Jimmy Kearney finished things out at the bottom of the game, with only one hit during the scoreless inning. The Falcons’ real shine was at the plate, where Will Edgerton and Bryant Hill each went two for three. Edgerton contributed a double for the Falcons. Jordan Carr was 1-2 with a triple that sent three Falcons across the plate. Connor Narron was also 1-2 with a double and an RBI. Zach Wright was 1-3 with two RBI, and John Taylor had one RBI. Tyler Ruffin and Stephen Strouse both 1-3 in Thursday’s game, each contributed a double. The Falcon boys earned a second win the following night, topping Clayton 10-7. Once again, the boy’s took a few innings to hit their stride, earning one run to Clayton’s three in the first inning. Aycock tied the score at three in the third inning, and then charged toward the finish, earning seven runs before the close of the sixth. Wright and Narron each had a home run for the Falcons. Wright’s long hit brought in two runs, and Narron’s homer sent three teammates around the bases. Edgerton also had a strong night, going 3-4, and Taylor had two RBI for Aycock. Dubose was the winning pitcher despite only throwing one inning. Darren Limbaugh took the top four innings at the mound, and Kearney and Josh Martin each pitched an inning as well. The Aycock boys dealt a double-digit loss to the reigning 1A champions from Princeton on Monday evening. The boys built a steady lead at the plate, starting off with a home run from Edgerton. Two more runs came in during the first inning, and the boys had built up a 9-0 lead by the end of the third inning. Allowing Princeton their only run in the fourth inning, the Aycock boys boosted their own run tally to 12 and held on to their lead throughout the final inning. Aycock took the win, 12-1. Randolph was the winning pitcher for Aycock, going for all five innings. He allowed only one run, six hits, and had three strikeouts for the game. In addition to his game-starting homer, Edgerton had a double for the Falcons and went 3-3 at bat. He had three RBI for Monday. Zach Wright was 2-2 at bat, earning a double and an RBI. Martin was 2-3 with three RBI, and Carr was 1-3 with two RBI. Strouse was 1-3, but made that one hit count with a double and an RBI. For more photos from the game, see the gallery
