File a tax return for 2007 to get the IRS stimulus payment
28 February 2008 – To stimulate the economy, eligible taxpayers will receive stimulus payments from the Internal Revenue Service beginning in May. These stimulus payments were first called tax rebates, and will range in amount depending on the taxpayer.
The most important thing to remember is that to receive a stimulus payment, you must file 2007 taxes, even if you have not done so in the past. The payment is based on tax liability, with a maximum amount of $600 for individuals. The law allows for payments to select taxpayers who have no tax liabilities, such as low-income workers, Social Security recipients or those receiving benefits from Veteran’s Affairs in 2007. For these taxpayers, you will be eligible for a payment of $300 if you had at least $3,000 of income.
Taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number to be eligible. Eligible taxpayers will also receive an additional $300 for each eligible child who also has a valid Social Security number. Individuals using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number are ineligible.
The stimulus payments will be made in the same way that you receive your tax refund. For example, if you request that your refund be directly deposited into your bank account, the stimulus payment will arrive there as well. If you have not yet filed your taxes, consider direct deposit, as it is the fastest way to get your refund and the stimulus payment.
The IRS will mail two informational notices to taxpayers advising them of the stimulus payment. However, you should be alert to possible scams asking you for sensitive information over the phone or through e-mail. The Internal Revenue Service will not call or e-mail taxpayers about stimulus payments. If you feel that you are being scammed, you can forward e-mails to phishing@irs.gov.
