State Highway Patrol reports

28 February 2008 – The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported the following incidents:

Eric Scott, 50, of Goldsboro and Mary Batts Floars, 38, of Stantonsburg were involved in a fender-bender in the Charles B. Aycock High parking lot on Saturday. Both vehicles were facing north in the lot, and Mr. Scott backed his vehicle into Mrs. Floars’. His 2004 Dodge sustained an estimated $500 in damages, and he was cited with an unsafe movement. Mrs. Floars; 2007 Dodge sustained an estimated $1,200 worth of damages.

Mae DeGraffenri Marks, 86, of Dudley and Romantice William King, 25, of Goldsboro were involved in a collision on the corner of Highway 117 and Mount Carmel Church Road last Tuesday. Mr. King had slowed to make a left turn onto Mount Carmel Church Road when Mrs. Marks passed a vehicle behind his and struck Mr. King’s 1993 Chevrolet. Mr. King’s vehicle sustained an estimated $4,000 in damages, and Mrs. Marks’ 2006 Toyota sustained an estimated $1,200. Mrs. Marks was cited for improper passing.

Three vehicles were involved in a collision on Big Daddy’s Road outside of Pikeville on February 13. Sarah Elizabeth Bishop Hawkes, 25, of Pikeville had slowed to turn left. Michael Anthony Price, 36, of Pikeville failed to stop in time and struck the rear of her vehicle. Sandra Bass Jones, 57, of Pikeville was behind Mr. Price and also failed to stop in time, striking his rear bumper. Ms. Hawkes’ 2005 Honda sustained an estimated $3,500 in damages, while Mr. Price’s 2002 Jeep sustained $2,500 and Ms. Jones; 2006 Nissan sustained an estimated $500. Mr. Price and Ms. Jones were cited for failure to reduce speed.

Theron David Bennett Mattice, 16, of Goldsboro was involved in a single vehicle accident on Nahunta Road on February 15. He was traveling south on the roadway when his vehicle crossed the center line and ran off the road to the left. The vehicle struck a ditch and rolled onto its side, striking a cable box. The vehicle then returned upright. Mr. Mattice was cited for exceeding a safe speed and his 2000 Chrysler sustained an estimated $6,500 worth of damages.

Ashton Blake Grimes, 21, of Fremont was involved in a single-vehicle accident on Nahunta Road February 13. He was heading south when his vehicle ran off the road to the left, collided with a highway sign and then struck a ditch. His 1981 Chevrolet sustained an estimated $1,000 in damages.

Fremont Rescue and EMS BBQ

A barbecue chicken dinner sponsored by Fremont Rescue and EMS will be held on Sunday, March 2 starting at 11; eat in, take out, or drive-thru, at the EMS Building on Sycamore Street. Plates will be $6, with half a chicken, potatoes, beans, a roll, and a homemade desert.

The doors will open at 11, and the dinner will go until the food runs out.


Statewide burning ban

Due to hazardous forest fire conditions and the continuing drought, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources have enacted a statewide burning ban.

Storytime for preschoolers

Preschool story time for children ages 2-5 is held at the Fremont Library on Monday mornings at 10 a.m. Children are invited to come and participate in songs, craft projects, and the reading of fun books.


Fremont Free Clinic

The Fremont People's Free Clinic is held every third Saturday of the month, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at 107 Ward Street. Please come fasting if you would like your labs checked.
