New plan in place
for Fremont Library

28 February 2008 – By Sarah A. Wise • NL Staff Writer

The Friends of the Fremont Library unveiled floor plans for the buildings renovation at a meeting this week.
Library Plan
The plan was devised to make the most of both the current space and the current budget, said library director Jane Rustin. She said the design was based around tearing down as few walls as possible while maximizing use of the space.

Darron Flowers, a member of the Friends, stated that he disagreed with the design. He said that he remembered the original survey stating that the library needed more open space, not less.

In particular, he had objections to a conference room proposed for the back corner of the building. He said he felt it would compromise safety of children to have such a large space that could be closed off, allowing children to be taken out of the sight of the library staff.
He added if the room was to be locked unless it was in use, that would pose another problem. One of the building’s three exits is located in the proposed space, and he questioned whether it would violate fire code to keep that room locked.

Mrs. Rustin said she didn’t know the answer to the fire question, because the fire inspector had approved the plans with the idea that the room would be open.

But in response to the safety issue, Mrs. Rustin said the library board had a dual plan that would alleviate such issues.

First of all, the library would be outfitted with security cameras in each room, allowing an employee at the circulation desk to monitor activity all over the building.

In addition, the board is requesting funds to hire a second person to be in the library building.

“Even if it’s just a teenaged page, it’s a great improvement,” she said. “Everyone knows it’s unsafe to have just one person here.”
Norma Blackman said that she liked the idea of a conference room, because it added space to use for various library programs the branch has been unable to do before.

Mrs. Rustin added that the conference room at the Goldsboro branch is almost always booked up, and they expected that Fremont citizens would have the same kind of excitement about their conference space.

The board approved the plans as a starting point, and will begin seeking bids from contractors.

Fremont Rescue and EMS BBQ

A barbecue chicken dinner sponsored by Fremont Rescue and EMS will be held on Sunday, March 2 starting at 11; eat in, take out, or drive-thru, at the EMS Building on Sycamore Street. Plates will be $6, with half a chicken, potatoes, beans, a roll, and a homemade desert.

The doors will open at 11, and the dinner will go until the food runs out.

Statewide burning ban

Due to hazardous forest fire conditions and the continuing drought, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources have enacted a statewide burning ban.
