Fuel Spill at Charles B. Aycock High School

21 February 2008 — On Monday, February 18, a fuel oil spill was discovered at CBA High, behind the gym, near the school’s boiler room. School was closed for Presidents Day.

“We believe that the return valve was shut off on the primary fuel tank. This caused pressure to build up in the line, causing a seal in the boiler system’s fuel pump to rupture,” states Danny Langley, WCPS Director of Maintenance.

“Emergency services, HAZMAT, and the EPA were called in on Monday to access the spill and assist with identifying cleanup measures. We believe approximately 300 gallons spilled out of the tank. Crews were able to recover 173 gallons, but the rest was absorbed into the soil outside of the boiler room or went down a storm drain,” adds Mr. Langley.

On Tuesday, February 19, physical education classes were temporarily moved to the old gym, while offices near the boiler room were ventilated. The school system will continue working with the EPA to ensure all appropriate steps are taken in the cleanup.
