Four wrestlers advance to State21 February 2008 — The Falcon wrestlers will be sending four of their men to the state championships this weekend after the Aycock boys finished third overall in the region this past weekend. Coach Mark Bass said the team performed well overall this weekend, replicating their efforts all season. “The regional tournament was very similar to the season as a whole,” he said. “We got contributions from nearly everyone in the line-up. It was a true workman-like effort for our wrestling team this weekend.” Four of the Aycock boys finished in the top three of their division, and Jarrett Covar finished as champion in the 215 division. Covar arrived the number four seed, but defeated both the third and first seed on his way to the title. Coach Bass said that, as expected, Covar’s final match was against Foy Coley of Eastern Wayne, with whom he says Covar has had “a handful of epic bouts all season, and this was no different.” The victory came to Covar by a 3-1 decision, earning his first regional title and the only title for the Falcons this season. “Jarrett really ‘showed up’ this weekend,” said Coach Bass. “He found a new level to his wrestling ability.” Drake Gurley (119), Kevin Carmel (135), and Khiry Reid (Hwt) earned third place finishes in their respective weight classes. Gurley also defeated an Eastern Wayne opponent for his spot with an 8-3 decision. Carmel won with an 8-0 decision against an Eastern Wayne opponent. Reid’s final match was a 7-3 victory over West Brunswick. “These guys had a good weekend as well,” he said. “They all wrestled extremely well, but lost close decisions in the semi finals. Each one dug down and wrestled back to third.” Coach Bass also commended the performance of senior Josh Grimes in last weekend’s tournament. “Grimes really impressed me this weekend,” he said. “After being injured and out unable to practice for the two previous weeks, he competed. He did so with only 2 full days of practice, and still not at a hundred percent. He missed states by that final win, but gained my utmost respect for his heart and way in which he competed all weekend.” After county-wide practices for the state qualifiers this week, the four Aycock boys will travel to Winston-Salem on Friday to compete for the state title.
