Lady Falcons play hard to season's end21 February 2008 — The Aycock girls seized victory last week in a tight match-up against Eastern Wayne for their final home game of the season. But the ladies were on the other end of a nail-biter Thursday night in their final contest of the season. For most of the game Thursday night, the teams were locked in a scoring battle, each team never falling more than a few points behind the other. At the end of the first period, the Saints boasted the lead by two points. By halftime, the Aycock girls only lacked two baskets to catch up to Southern Wayne, and as the final period approached, they had narrowed that lead to one point. With the score poised at 47-46 in favor of the Saints, the Aycock ladies played a defensive game and exerted every effort to limit Southern Wayne’s scoring opportunities while maximizing their own. With less than a minute to go, it seemed that the Aycock ladies could have a repeat performance of their match with Eastern Wayne and seizing the win by a mere point. But a foul late in the game threw the ladies off guard, and the Saints managed to gain a five-point lead for the win, defeating Aycock 67-62. Coach Carrie Reynell commended the hard work of her team after Thursday’s game. “We couldn't finish the game as we would have liked--with a win,” she said. “Clark and Leonard both had great nights for Southern Wayne; we had a hard time limiting their points.” She also pointed to the performances of several key Falcons in maximizing the Aycock girls’ game. “Courtney Sheeks and Briana Reid played very well tonight. Those girls were working hard on the boards and making as many of their possessions count." In addition, she said that the game was a good final note for senior standout Chantel Gaines. “Southern Wayne could not stop her; she was quite determined tonight to end her career at CBA with some authority. She more than stepped up tonight for her team.” Gaines had a career-high 37 points for the Falcons, including one three-pointer. She also had seven rebounds and three assists. Sheeks had eight points and five rebounds, and Reid had seven points. Yolanda Pitt contributed six points and five assists, and Kendra Speight rounded out the scoring with four points. Monday night, the girls were eliminated in the first round of the Eastern Carolina Conference Championships with a loss to Kinston. The girls were defeated 48-35, and Gaines led the Falcons in scoring with 19 points.
