Strong showing in narrow S. Wayne defeat

21 February 2008 — In one of their best performances all season, the Aycock boys’ basketball team suffered a narrow defeat in overtime against Southern Wayne to end their 2007-2008 regular season.

The Saints started off a little stronger than the Aycock boys, earning 16 to the Falcons’ 11 in the first period. By halftime, the Saints had increased their lead to nine points.

But in the second half, Aycock refused to back down, narrowing that gap to two points by the end of the third. As the buzzer sounded to end the fourth period, the teams stood tied at 51.

As the game went into overtime, the Falcons continued matching the Saints, and with 30 second remaining, the score remained tied, this time at 60 points. A scoring basket from Southern Wayne gave the Saints the victory in the last seconds.

Jonathan Williams led Aycock offensively, collecting 21 points for the Falcons. Jordan Riley earned 17 points, including one three-pointer, and David Gurganus had 14 points. Michael King contributed one point.

The boys finished their season in the first round of the Eastern Carolina Conference Monday night with an 83-52 loss to Hunt. Reid led the Falcons with 14 points and Andre Bryant had nine.
