CBA Scholastic Gold/Silver Key Winners Named21 February 2008 — Some Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) students recently competed in the National Scholastic Art Awards competition for the Eastern/Central North Carolina Region, held at Barton College in Wilson. Five WCPS students were among the 200 Gold Key award recipients named and four WCPS students were among the 200 Silver Key award recipients named. CBA’s Gold Key winners include Kelsey Berens, for her drawing, “The Eyes of the Beholder”l Khiry Reid, for his drawing, “Being Me”; and Katelyn Hatfield, for her mixed media, “Shout!” Silver Key winners include Kimberly Donk, for her mixed media, “Magic Touch”; and Madison Jordan, for her sculpture, “Imaginary Poodle” The students competed against around 1,900 entries from across 62 counties that were entered in the regional competition at Barton College. Students 7th though 12th grade whose artworks were selected at their local school, were allowed to compete at the regional competition. On January 20, the Gold Key winners were honored in Wilson for their winning artworks. Their pictures were displayed at the Barton Museum from January 21 through February 8. After being on display, the “Golden Key” art projects will head to New York to compete in the next level of the Scholastic Art Awards National Competition. There, the five WCPS Gold Key winners will compete against thousands of students from around the country who also earned Gold Key awards for their art projects. The Gold Key winners of that competition will compete in the National level of the competition in Washington D.C. in June. Scholastic Art Awards Incorporated has celebrated more than 80 years as a unique presence in our nation's classrooms by identifying and documenting outstanding achievement of young artists and writers in the visual and literary arts. “We are proud of these students for their hard work and accomplishment in the area of arts,” states Dr. Taylor, WCPS Superintendent. “We wish the Gold Key winners the best of luck in the next stage of this competition. We know they will make fine representatives of Wayne County Public Schools.”
