stantonsburg police report

14 February 2008 — The Stantonsburg Police Department reported the following incidents:

The police department and the Stantonsburg – Moyton Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at the Friendly Mart on January 21.

The owner of the vehicle, Joseph Hooker, told officers that he had been experiencing trouble with his Ford F-150 as he traveled into Stantonsburg on Highway 58, and he decided to pull into the Friendly Mart parking lot. Once he stopped, he said sparks began to develop in the dash, and he exited the vehicle right before it burst into flames.

An investigation pinpointed mechanical failure between the engine compartment and wires in the dash as the cause of the fire. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $4,500.

Stantonsburg officers picked up a man delinquent on child support payments during a traffic stop on January 23. After stopping a white 1991 Cadillac for speeding along Highway 58 near Commercial Avenue, officers became suspicious of the passenger in the vehicle, who was leaning his body out of the window to look back at the officers. While officers were speaking with the driver, Teresa Ellis, the passenger would not make eye contact. After identifying the passenger, Robert Odell Jones of Wilson, the officer conducted a warrant check.

The check revealed that Mr. Jones had three outstanding warrants with the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department for failing to make child support payments. After he was taken into custody, a search of the vehicle found a small plastic bag containing marijuana stuffed between the passenger seat and the center console. Mr. Jones claimed ownership of the drugs and was issued a citation. Mrs. Ellis was given a warning and was allowed to lead. Mr. Jones was taken to the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department.

Officers arrested a Greene County woman on January 24 for felonious larceny by employee.

Shakita Bynum of Snow Hill was charged with the offense after officers received a complaint from the store manager that she was scratching lottery tickets during her shift and restocking losing cards. During a video surveillance of Mrs. Bynum during her shift, officers saw Mrs. Bynum committing the offense multiple times.

She was released from her position at the business, and taken to the Wilson County Jail, where she was held under a $3,000 secured bond.
