Falcons eliminated from duals

14 February 2008 — At the beginning of their season, the Aycock boys set a long list of goals to achieve this season. After fulfilling their goals of earning the top spot in individual and dual tournaments on the conference level, the boys set out on Monday to earn a statewide duals championship win.

But in an anxiety-inducing match against Eastern Alamance, the boys were eliminated in the first round of duals competition with a 34-33 loss.

The boys made an impressive showing last Tuesday night, earning seven wins in the 14 matches despite having two wrestlers out of the competition. Injury and illness sidelined Josh Grimes and Nick Bently, and their spots were taken by less experienced wrestlers.

After the Falcons suffered four straight match losses at the top of the night, Jarrett Covar earned the first Aycock win by major decision, 12-2 in the 215 division. Heavyweight Khiry Reid followed with the first pin of the night, taking down his opponent in 1:06.

Justin Farrell had another pin in 3:22 at 112, and Joseph Conner followed with a technical fall, 17-2, in the 119 class. Dustin Gurley had an 8-2 win at 125, and Brandon Bailey earned a win in the evening’s shortest match, pinning his opponent in 24 seconds, giving Aycock a 30-28 advantage.

After the Falcons dropped the 135 contest, Kevin Carmel earned a 8-2 win at 140, putting the pressure on Ryan Butts in the last match of the night.

After four rounds of overtime, Eastern Alamance broke through the 2-2 tie in the match to earn the win, 3-2.

The Aycock boys will compete in the 3A regional tournament this Friday and Saturday at South Central High School in Winterville.
