Aycock girls take Hunt win down to wire

14 February 2008 — The Aycock girls’ basketball team commemorated Senior Night on Friday by earning their second conference win of the season against Wilson Hunt with a 46-45 victory.

The Lady Falcons took the court for their last home pretty evenly matched against the Hunt Warriors.  Both teams stood at 1-7 for the season, but Hunt had notched their only victory with a ten-point win over Aycock last month. On senior night, the Lady Falcons weren’t about to let that happen again.

The two teams virtually matched each other point-for-point for much of the game. At the end of the first period, the score stood tied at 12, but the Falcon girls pushed for a three-point advantage by the half.

The Warriors had pushed that lead to a mere point by the end of the third period.  After the Hunt girls had seized a four-point advantage late in the final quarter, the Falcons bounced back to tie their score. Going into the final minute of play, the score stood at 45-45.

As the seconds dwindled, it appeared that the game could go into overtime. But a foul against Aycock’s Chantel Gaines with 2.7 seconds remaining changed that outlook.

The crowed cheered for Gaines as she took her place at the line, attempting to earn the win. After missing her first shot, the Falcon fans quieted as the Warrior fans got louder. Gaines sunk the second shot, giving the Falcons a one-point advantage, and causing the team members on the bench to begin celebrating the win.

Gaines was the lead scorer, earning 23 points for the night. Yolanda Pitt also earned a double-digit score, adding on 11 points for the Aycock ladies. Courtney Sheeks had five, while Brianna Reid contributed four, Newsome had two, and Paige Garrett had one.

But Friday night’s momentum didn’t carry into Tuesday night’s game, and the Lady Falcons fell to Eastern Wayne, 80-37.

The girls started out behind, as the Warriors amassed 29 points in the first quarter alone. The Falcons had earned 19 by the half, but the Eastern Wayne girls had almost doubled their score by then, touting 51 points.

The third quarter was the biggest for Aycock, with the girls adding 11 points, but Eastern Wayne outdid them again, adding 15 to their score. The Aycock ladies earned six more in the final period, but their effort was crushed by the 14 points the Warriors added to their already huge lead.

Gaines had the high score with 24 points. Pitt had four points, along with four steals, and Reid had three. Newsome and Orosco had two points apiece, and Sheeks and Dori Oxendine each contributed a point.

Aycock’s 43-point defeat bumped them to 2-7 for the conference, and the ladies will play their final game of the season at Southern Wayne on Thursday night.
