Heartbreaking 1-point losses for Cobra boys7 February 2008 — The Lady Cobras added two more wins to their record this week, while the boys suffered two one-point losses. The Norwayne girls handed down a 56-9 win over Dillard Thursday, boosting their conference record to 4-0 for the season. The ladies came out of the gate ready to win, scoring 19 during the first period and holding Dillard at zero. Dillard slipped past to earn seven points before the half, but the Cobras had boosted their score to 33. Going into the final quarter, the ladies had established a forty-point lead. Dillard managed to get two more points in the final period, but couldn’t top the Norwayne girls who finished 56-9. Imari Howell was the Cobras’ lead scorer on Thursday, earning 17 points. Ivey Hartzell also hit double-digits, earning 12 points. Brooke Bell contributed five points, and Courntei Gilbert had four points and nine assists. Connor Davis and Natana Martin each had four points as well. Jenna VanHorn, Reagan Herndon, Tyecha Newsome, and Madison Mercer each contributed two points. Monday afternoon the girls held their opponents to a single digit score for the third game in a row, beating Grantham 50-3. The ladies consistently built up their score, earning 32 in the first half of the game. Meanwhile, Grantham narrowly escaped a scoreless match, earning their three points in the final period. Scoring spread evenly, with 11 of the 14 Lady Cobras scoring and no player earning double digits. Howell was again the lead scorer with nine points, while Gilbert had eight. Taylor Tindal and Newsome both earned career-high scores of seven and six, respectively. Herndon also had six points, while Bell contributed four. VanHorn, Davis, Hartzell, Martin, and Kayla Newsome each earned two points for the Cobra’s victory. Meanwhile for the boys, following early leads by their opponents with a barrage of scoring in the second half resulted in two one-point losses for Norwayne. On Thursday, Dillard doubled Norwayne’s score in the first period, and had built a seven-point lead by halftime. In the second half, the Cobras earned 16 points to Dillard’s 10, but fell one point shy of their score. Dillard earned the win 27-26. Jalen Williams had 10 points, while Kareem Alawar and A.J. Mundle each had six. Greg Williams and Hunter Jones contributed two apiece. A similar story unfolded on Monday as the boys traveled to Grantham. A three-point lead for Grantham at the end of the first period had turned to a nine-point lead by halftime. Though the boys matched Grantham’s six points in the third and outscored them by eight in the final period, they again fell one point short. Grantham defeated Aycock 38-37. Mundle was the lead scorer at Grantham, earning 14 points. Alawar had seven, and Jalen Williams had six. Greg Williams and Bryant Stafford had four points each, and Hunter Britt contributed two. The Cobras have two final chances to boost their records this week with a game at Rosewood on Thursday, followed by their final home match against Eastern Wayne on Monday.
