Aycock brings home gold from ECC tourney7 February 2008 — The Aycock wrestlers were fierce competitors in this weekend’s Eastern Carolina Conference Individual Tournament, with all of their starters finishing in the top three of their class, and five Falcons earning top honors. “Anytime every wrestler in your lineup brings home a top three finish, you will have a successful tournament individually and as a team,” said Coach Mark Bass. Coach Bass added that the boys had spent all season preparing for the tournament, and their hard work and focus had paid off. “We started out the day aggressive and with a lot of intensity,” he said. The Falcons earned bonus points after winning 15 of their first 21 matches by pin, a move that was crucial to winning the tournament. “Today, we were able to keep the energy high, the wrestling consistent, and avoid any real lulls in our performance,” Coach Bass said. “These are all issues we have dealt with earlier in the year since replacing so many excellent wrestlers from a year ago.” Five Falcon wrestlers earned the gold in their respective weight classes. Justin Farrell (112) had a first place finish after defeating Eastern Wayne with a 7-3 decision, and pinning his Beddingfield opponent after 3:27. Joseph Conner had the top spot in the 119 division. Conner had a first-period pin against Southern Wayne, and a pin after 4:43 against Eastern Wayne. A match with Hunt resulted in a third victory, with Conner winning in a 6-3 decision. Drake Gurley, who has consistently won top honors in tournaments all season, earned a conference gold in the 125 division on Saturday. In Gurley’s closest match of the day, he won by 3-2 decision against Eastern Wayne. He also had pins against Southern Wayne and Beddingfield. At 140, Kevin Carmel earned another Aycock gold. Carmel had a win by major decision over Eastern Wayne, and a 14-8 win over Southern Wayne. He also had pins against Beddingfield and Hunt. Jarrett Covar was the fifth Aycock wrestler that earned first place, claiming top honors in the 215 class. Competition was tight in the division, and Covar earned the gold with a 3-0 decision over Eastern Wayne and a pin after 5:06 against Beddingfield. Aycock’s silver medalists were Nick Bently (103), Brandon Bailey (130), Freddie Coley (160), Josh Grimes (171), Brandon Diorio (189) and Khiry Reid (285). Jacob Marple (135), James Jones (145), and Ryan Butts (152) earned third place in their respective divisions. Though the Falcons claimed another victory with their Conference Tournament Win, their season mission had not been completed yet. On Tuesday night, the Falcons embarked on the first rounds of state dual championships on their home turf.
