GARY W. WARD

Gary Wayne Ward, 33, of Princeton, died Saturday, February 2.

Born in Wayne County on September 9, 1974, he was the son of Jerry Earl Ward and Rose Godwin Grimes. He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 5 at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Princeton, with the Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Gary is survived by his mother and stepfather, Rose and John Grimes of Pikeville; and his brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Teresa Ward, his niece, Brooke Marie Ward, and his nephew, Tyler Reese Tilghman, all of Princeton.

Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to The NC Spinal Cord Association, 3701 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh NC 27609.

The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service. Friends are welcome at the home of Rose and John Grimes in Pikeville.

HAZEL P. BIZZELL

Hazel Peedin Bizzell, 79, of Goldsboro, died Wednesday, January 30 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Hazel was born in Johnston County on May 19, 1928 to the late Henry Clarence Peedin and Addie Mae Stafford Peedin. She was married to the late Thomas Sandy Bizzell

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 1 at 2 p.m. at Pikes Crossroads Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Merrill Davis, Dr. Don Sauls and the Rev. Jimmy Whitfield officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Judy Stevens and husband, Richard, of Goldsboro; her sons, Jerry Bizzell and wife, Jane, of Kenly and Jimmy Bizzell and wife, Cathy, of Goldsboro; her sisters, Frances P. McFatter and husband, James, of Pikeville and Margaret P. Hollowell and husband, Jimmy, of Goldsboro; her brothers, Jesse Peedin of Goldsboro and Raymond E. Peedin of Raleigh; her brother-in-law, Clyde Tilton of Goldsboro; her grandchildren, Kevin Stevens and wife, Jennifer, Michael Stevens and fiancée, Casey, Scott Bizzell and wife, Alissa, April Foulk and husband, Mike, Jamie Smith and husband, Harry, and Christa Bizzell; and eight great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Sarah Beth Stevens, Matthew and Alex Faulk, Zoe Bizzell, Caleb, Camden and Caitlyn Smith.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ruth P. Tilton; and two brothers, Fletcher Peedin and Herman Peedin.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home of Judy and Richard Stevens, 112 Livingston Drive, Goldsboro, N.C.

LAWLOS E. BLAND

Lawlos "Lois" Edmundson Bland, of Orlando, Fla., died Tuesday, January 29.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 2 at 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Edmundson Family Cemetery.

Mrs. Bland was preceded in death by her husband, Col. George T. Bland, USAF Retired; her daughter, Betsy Bland; her parents, Burrell and Bessie Edmundson; her sisters and brothers-in-law, LaDell and Charlie Shackelford, Mollie and Fred Kirby; and her brothers and sister-in-law, Jim and Elma Edmundson and B.J. Edmundson.

Mrs. Bland graduated from Pikeville High School and the Women's College of North Carolina in Greensboro. She was a member of Aloma United Methodist Church in Winter Park, Fla.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Tom Bland Jr. and Nancy Bland; three grandchildren, George Bland IV, Elizabeth Bland, Mackenzie Bland; two great-grandchildren, Elijah Bland and Tristen Bland of Orlando, Fla.; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry and Joanne Edmundson, Roscoe and Clara Edmundson of Pikeville; three sisters, Bertha Davis of Fremont, Ruth Hokum of Swansboro, and Atha Tunnell of Edenton.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, 1300 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.

ESTHER COLEY

Esther Coley, 83, of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., died Monday, January 21.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, February 2 at Hooks Grove Baptist Church, Pikeville, with the Rev. Johnnie Sherrod officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her daughter, Francis Shingler of Florida; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church with the family present to receive friends. The family will assemble at 108 Sandy Drive in preparation for the funeral procession.

Arrangements are by McIntyre Funeral Home Ministries.

JAMES 'PETE' W. COLEY

James Willard "Pete" Coley, 75, of Raeford, died Sunday, January 27 at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte.

Pete was born in Pikeville on March 8, 1932 to the late Needham and Estelle Coley. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Reid, and his sister, Margie Coley.

Pete is survived by his wife, Frances Coley; two daughters, Janice Greene, Jackie Reid and husband, Darrell; one son, James Coley; three stepsons, Gary Greene and wife, Diane, Richard Greene, Anthony Greene and wife, Marcie, all of Goldsboro; one stepdaughter; Annette Artis and husband, Greg, of Pikeville; five grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters; one brother; three brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; one aunt; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 3, at 11 a.m. from Hamilton Funeral Chapel, Goldsboro, with the Rev. Ernest Watson Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Wayne Memorial Park Cemetery, U.S. 117 Highway South. A viewing will be conducted on Saturday, February 2 at Hamilton Funeral Chapel from 1 to 7 p.m. Also, a wake will be held at Hamilton Funeral Chapel from 6 to 7 p.m. with the family present to receive other family members and friends.

PASTOR J. CARLIE HINNANT SR.

Pastor J. Carlie Hinnant Sr., 77, of Goldsboro, died Saturday, January 26 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Royal Franklin Hinnant and Ella Best Hinnant and the husband of Burnice Gurley Hinnant. Before his retirement, he served as pastor at Temple Baptist Church in Pikeville.

In addition to his wife, Pastor Hinnant is survived by his daughter and her husband, Margaret Anne Drotzur and Corey Drotzur; son, James Carlie Hinnant, Jr. "Jim" and his wife, Brenda Parnell Hinnant; granddaughter, Jennifer Hinnant; grandsons, Greg Drotzur and wife, Ashley, Brad Hinnant and wife, Cheryl, and Christopher Drotzur as well as two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Lou Howell and her husband, Billy; four brothers-in-law, John William Gurley and his wife, Peggy, Thomas Gurley, Horace Gurley, Jesse Ray Gurley and his wife, Ann.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Hinnant.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 29 at 7 p.m. at Freedom Baptist Church. Pastor David Jackson officiated. Committal services were Wednesday morning at Wayne Memorial Park.

 

SANDRA L. KEARNEY

Sandra Lee Kearney, 60, of Goldsboro, died Tuesday, January 29 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A native of the Lindell Community of Wayne County, she was born on December 12, 1947, the daughter of the late Lonnie Robert and Bessie Lee Carlisle Kearney.

Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, January 31, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service in Snow Hill with the Rev. James Gurkins officiating. Committal services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at the Eureka Cemetery.

In addition to her parents, a brother, Lonnie Carson Kearney, also preceded Sandra in death.

She is survived by her sisters, Pattie Kearney Long and husband, Floyd, of Hertford, Carolyn Kearney Goodwin and husband, Buddy, of Fremont; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Thursday immediately following the service and other times at the home of Buddy and Carolyn Goodwin, 509 Hillandale Drive, Fremont.

LENETTA B. KNIGHT

Lenetta B. Knight, 90, of Selma, died Saturday, January 26 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Born October 11, 1917 in Wilson County, Mrs. Knight was a daughter of the late Elijah and Lenora Carter Barnes. She was the widow of Roosevelt Knight. Mrs. Knight was a member of Brown’s Chapel Church near Pikeville.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Missionary Baptist Church in Smithfield. Bishop Sheldon L. Parker will officiate. Burial will follow in Selma Memorial Gardens.

Surviving are seven daughters, Annie Sanders, Sandra Laster, Carolyn Dockery, and Shirley Whack, all of Selma, Alma Phillips and Dwight Sanders, both of Clayton, and Lenora Conyers of Manning, S.C.; a son, Randolph Knight of Pikeville; four sisters, Mary Whitfield of Micro, Jeannette Sherrod of Monroe, Oddessa Williams of Roanoke, Va., and Sarah Chappell of Clayton; a brother, George Barnes of Columbia, S.C.; twenty-eight grandchildren; fifty-five great-grandchildren; and twenty-five great-great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 2 to 6 p.m. today (Friday) at McKinnie Memorial and Bailey Funeral Home, 101 S. Webb St., Selma.

 

WAYNE CLIFTON PRICE

Funeral services for Wayne Clifton Price, 58, of Camden, S.C., will be held Thursday, January 31, at 2 p.m. at Beulah United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery with full military honors. The Rev. Vince Halter will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans, Department Adjutant, Thomas J. Campbell, 3716 Shallow Pond Road, Columbia, S.C. 29223.

Born in Wilson, he was the son of the late John Clifton and Lillie Mae Lamm Price. Mr. Price was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Vietnam and he was the recipient of three Bronze Stars. He retired from civil service at Fort Jackson. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 17 James Leroy Belk and Beulah United Methodist Church where he formerly served on the board of trustees.

Surviving are his wife, Katie Bourland Price; daughters, Kathy E. Kea of Hickory, and K. Dawn Droz of Charleston, S.C.; son, Samuel F. Estepp of Alamogordo, N.M.; sister, Patricia Smith of Fremont, Julie Denning of Goldsboro, and Jean Godwin of Kenly; brothers, James D. Price, William R. Price and Alton H. Price, all of Kenly; granddaughters, Amara Coote, Tiffany Droz, Lindsay Kea and Fielding Estepp; grandsons, Brandon Droz and Carter Estepp.

RALPH E. SASSER

Ralph E. Sasser, 69, of Fremont, died Wednesday morning, January 30, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m. from the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. Dr. Robert Langley will officiate. Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 1 at 11 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.

Mr. Sasser was born in Wilson County on May 25, 1938, to Lafayette and Sallie Collins Sasser. He was formerly employed with Swift Company and the owner and operator of Sasser Garage for over 32 years in Fremont.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Bradshaw Sasser; one son, Jeffery Sasser and his wife, Lynn, of Pikeville; one daughter, Celeste Forehand and her husband, Randy, of Pikeville; three sisters, Faye Davis and her husband, Wiley, of Black Creek, Rachel Kelly and her husband, Glenn, of Wilson, Agnes Cunningham and her husband, Harvey, of Glady's, Va.; and five grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Sasser was preceded in death by one sister; three brothers and one half-brother.

The family will receive friends following the funeral service this evening at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont and other times at the residence.
