Unstoppable Cobras at 10-0

31 January 2008 — The Norwayne girls moved to 10-0 this week with a pair of wins against Greenwood and Brogden.

Thursday afternoon, the ladies played host to Greenwood, winning 43-15.

The Lady Cobras had established a lead by the end of the first period with eight points to Greenwood’s four. As the game progressed, the ladies had tacked five more points to their lead margin to finish the half with a 14-5 lead.

But the ladies came together in the second half to seal the deal, earning a total of 21 points while the defense limited Greenwood to six points.

Courtnei Gilbert led the Cobras offensively with 12 points, and Imari Howell followed with 11 points. Ivy Hartzell and Brooke Bell each had five points, while Tyecha Newsome had four. Connor Davis, Natana Martin, and Reagan Herndon each had two.

The ladies followed up with a big win over Brogden on Monday afternoon. Coach Pam Andrews said all her girls came off the bench, and everyone on the team saw a good amount of time in the game.

The girls had already established a 20-0 lead by the end of the first period, and only saw scoring from Brogden during the second period. By the end of the first half, the Cobras led 34-4. The Norwayne ladies tacked on 13 more points in the second half while holding Brogden at four points. The ladies earned a big win, 47-4.

Herndon earned a career high 12 points and was the lead scorer for the game. Gilbert had ten points, Howell had eight, and Hartzell had four. Jenna VanHorn, Bell, Davis, Martin, and Kayla Newsome had two points each, and Alaina Moore had one point.

The Norwayne boys had two losses this week, falling to Greenwood on Thursday and Brogden on Monday.

The boys were behind from the very beginning on Thursday as they played host to Greenwood. By the end of the first period, the boys were down 15-1, and Greenwood had established a 20-point advantage by the half. The boys played better in the second half, earning 15 points to Grantham’s 21, but they couldn’t make up for their errors earlier in the game.

Kareem Alawar was the lead scorer, earning seven points. Jalen Williams had five points, while AJ Mundle and Kyle Powell each had three. Hunter Britt had two.

The story was similar on Monday, as the boys fell behind by 17 points before the halftime buzzer. But the second half didn’t feature redeeming scoring, and the boys suffered a dismal 54-23 loss.

Williams was the lead scorer on Monday, earning eight points, while Mundle had five and Alawar had four. Britt had three points, and Hunter Jones and Powell each had two. Greg Williams contributed one point.

Norwayne will host Dillard on Thursday, and will travel to Grantham on Monday.
