Tough week for hoops picks

31 January 2008 — It was a tough week to pick winners in the Pick the Hoops Contest. In fact, some had better luck picking losers over winners, with the hard to predict ACC schedule, and ECU and Aycock teams all stumbling.

Three got six of the eight games right. Donnie Hare of Wilson missed the Boston College loss to Virginia Tech, and Clemson’s loss to Miami. Daisy Best and Kay Rose, of Belfast and Eureka respectively, both also missed on the BC-Va Tech game, and went for Florida State instead of the Wolfpack. That threw the contest to the tie-breaker. Mr. Hare picked an 88-82 Duke win, only seven off the actual 93-84, besting Ms. Best and Ms. Rose by a bunch.

Runner-up honors go to Connie Ballance, Angie Heath, Connie Lancaster, Ken Langston, Todd Rose and Nathaniel L. Sanders Jr.

Honorable mentions go to Lanell Brown, Dan Crawford, Lewis Craig Partin, and Vickie Pippin.

Mr. Hare won two tickets to the Virginia Tech game at NC State on Feb. 5.

This week we are offering four tickets to the Rice at ECU game the next night, Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. They could be going to you, but only if you enter. Cut out the entry in today’s News Leader and bring it by our office before 5 p.m. Friday, mail it in time to be sure it gets a Friday postmark, or enter by 5 p.m. online.
