Aycock fire investigation continuesBy Sarah A. Wise 31 January 2008 — An early morning fire damaged one of the structures at the Charles B. Aycock Birthplace historical site. Around 4:00 last Thursday morning, the alarm system at the site notified authorities of a fire. Firefighters from the Fremont, Pikeville and Antioch Fire Departments responded to the blaze. The fire, which appeared to have started on the back porch of the main building, was contained and did not spread to other buildings on the site. Upon investigation, the Wayne County Sheriff’s department determined the fire to be suspicious. The back porch, roof, and part of the interior of the 19th century home sustained damages. Site Manager Leigh Strickland said the damage to both the structure and artifacts inside is estimated at around $200,000. Ms. Strickland credits the quick response of the local fire departments and the site’s alarm system with preventing a complete loss. The site will invest in repairing the damaged structures and artifacts, and are asking for community help with the restoration. A fund, entitled the Governor Charles B. Aycock Recovery and Restoration Fund, will be established. Citizens who are interested may make donations to the fund to assist in the restoration of the site. Checks should be made to Aycock Birthplace, and should mention the Recovery and Restoration Fund in the memo section. Donors should mail the checks to the site at PO Box 207, Fremont NC, 27830. The site will remain closed to the public while repairs are underway.
