Fire at Aycock Birthplace

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer

24 January 2008 — An early morning fire damaged one of the structures at the Charles B. Aycock Birthplace historical site.

Around 4:00 Thursday morning, the alarm system at the site notified authorities of a fire. Firefighters from the Fremont, Pikeville and Antioch Fire Departments responded to the blaze.

The fire, which appeared to have started on the back porch of the main building, was contained and did not spread to other buildings on the site.

The back porch, roof, and part of the interior of the 19th century home sustained damages. The full extent of the damage, said site manager Leigh Strickland, is not yet known because authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Site employees have not yet been allowed to survey the damages, and the site is temporarily closed to the public.

Ms. Strickland credits the quick response of the local fire departments and the site’s alarm system with preventing a complete loss.
