stantonsburg police report

17 January 2008 — Stantonsburg police are warning citizens in the area not to do business with a man by the name of Terrell Brown.

Police Chief John Hunt warnes that Mr. Brown, driving a truck marked Brown’s Renovation, has been swindling locals out of thousands of dollars.

“He’s been ripping people off left and right,” he said.

The town has heard at least three complaints against Mr. Brown, but Chief Hunt said it’s only a matter of time before more come pouring in from other areas in the county.

Mr. Brown was arrested and charged in one instance for obtaining property by false pretense against Mrs. Carolyn Smith of Hemphill road for $10,000. He was also charged with obtaining advances under a written promise to work and pay for the same.

Chief Hunt said one other complaintant was fortunate enough to be reimbursed, but that Mr. Brown is swindling people all over the area.

“He’s smooth,” he said. “He’s had 25 charges since 2002. I may not be able to keep him from doing it somewhere else, but it’s my job to get him out of the area.”

Mr. Brown was arrested and placed under a secured $1,500 bond.

Chief Hunt also reported an arrest for arson this past month.

Ervin Battle of N. Main Street was charged with second degree arson for a fire at his home. He is being held in the Wilson County Detention Center in lieu of $25,000 secured bond.
